The Beer Nerd - what are you drinking / brewing thread

You certainly know beer brewing so if you don't mind, I had a quick question as I am just getting into brewing and have my first IPA fermenting now. Are you typically doing secondary fermentation in the keg or do you normally transfer to another receptacle and then do a final keg transfer following secondary?

I wish she didn’t like beer this much! She’s gonna cost me a fortune haha. But, on the bright side I have someone to share all my good beer with and I don’t feel like it’s a waste opening up a really good bottle with her because I know she’ll enjoy it as much as I do!

 

2nd bottle of the night. Pretty disappointed in this one. Had a lot higher hopes for it and it turned out to just be a very average brew. Jolly pumpkin and monkish collab on a sour. Was more saison-ey than sour. Was ok but nothing great. Neither her or I were thrilled

 

I feel your struggle buddy! My GF always liked stouts and never liked bourbon... But ever since she had that Founders CBS, she wants to try every bourbon stout I get!

 

New Belgium is a good one if you can make it up to Fort Collins. They have a nice tasting room and a great selection, and if you go, be sure to take the brewery tour. It's 90 minutes and you get plenty of beer along the way. You can sign up online up to 2 months in advance, but they fill up fast, so don't wait to sign up. A couple blocks away from NBB is Odell, which is probably my favorite brewery in the area. They have an awesome family-friendly tasting room and patio and they always have a bunch of great small batch brews on tap, along with their flagship stuff. If you like sours/Brett beers, Funkwerks is pretty solid. Near Funkwerks is Horse & Dragon.

Nearby in Windsor is High Hops Brewery. They have several flagship brews that are always available and they always have a nice selection of smaller batch stuff that rotates frequently.

Closer to Denver in Longmont is Left Hand and Oskar Blues. OB is great if you want to have lunch/dinner along with some great beer. Avery Brewing is also nearby and worth a stop. There's also Wibby and Bootstrap.

Denver has a bunch of great breweries, but I don't get down there too often. Bierstadt is really good if you like German lagers. River North is supposed to be pretty good, as well. There's also Great Divide, Epic, & Dry Dock.

 

Yep, kegs are my secondary 99.9% of the time.

Awesome, good to know. I will look into getting a keg top that has the ability to view active fermentation. Since I haven't done this before, is there not much sediment in the bottom following secondary fermentation?

 

No, not much at all. That's one reason why some home brewers still like to do a secondary, as it makes it easier to rack the beer to the keg or bottling bucket without picking up a bunch of the primary trub. After secondary, there's usually just a thin layer from what was in suspension at the time of transfer. If you skip the secondary, the trub in suspension will settle on the bottom of the keg and won't be an issue as long as you don't move the keg.

 

Got it. I just built a small keezer out of a 5cubic foot chest freezer so I plan to just move from secondary tub to keg and it will sit in the freezer so everything should settle. I need to read up on the cold crashing process and CO2 pressures. It's been an awesome process so far.

 

Alright beer bros. Storm is over, back at work, and just ran out on my lunch break to buy some bubble wrap.

The plan is to get all 5 boxes ready tonight, and then send them out tomorrow to each of ya.

 

Where did you get Two Juicy? We aren't too far so I figured I would see it somewhere local-ish to me as well.

 

Found it at my local shop, right up the road from work, one day when I ran out on my lunch break. It's a chain called BevMax, and the store I bought it at is in Danbury CT.

Not my usual fare, but tasty. Light, a little tart with a nice boozy taste to it at 9%.

 

Gotcha, we are farther than I though as I am in Springfield, MA most of the time. The local Table and Vine is actually good about stocking beers and I make a trip to TreeHouse when I have the time.
