Go ask a dealer what it costs to buy a brand new transmission.
    I dare you.

That's not a rebuild you had, that was a "upgrade" where they change a few springs and take your money.

A friend just did for a Chevrolet. It is $3,500. I am not interested in looking it up for Toyota, but a rebuild isn't $5k. And a clutch isn't $100. You are full of shit on both ends.

EDIT: That was $3500 installed, for a 4wd truck.

Yes, buyt replacing a clutch is maintenance, and low cost maintenance at that. An automatic transmission failure is a little more serious, I think everyone can agree on that.

Autos also have parts that wear out...

Thats fair enough, I was just highlighting the fact that in general the 3rd gen autos have been far less reliable and plagued with issues compared to the manuals.

People have had issues ranging from what is described in this post to, searching for gears, the shifter seizing up and full recall level transmission replacements.

No MT owners are dealing with reliability issues...lets just throw that out there

I do understand the appeal of an auto though. My daily driver is an Auto

IMO the gear hunting "issue" is just whiny people wanting to bitch that the truck doesn't work exactly like they think it should. I discredit 100% of those. I read about it before the test drive. Neither the truck I test drove nor the one I bought exhibited this issue. And I drive very gently, meaning slow and for good fuel economy.

As for other issues, no vehicle ever made is without failures. The precious manuals will wear out and fail too. I have broken a couple T56's, and they are a lot more stout than what Toyota puts in a Tacoma. Doesn't mean the T56 is a bad transmission.

    you do this:
I read about it before the test drive. Neither the truck I test drove nor the one I bought exhibited this issue.

    and conclude this:
the gear hunting "issue" is just whiny people wanting to bitch that the truck doesn't work exactly like they think it should. I discredit 100% of those.

    well, ok.
