Haha I know man I'm just joking because you're going pretty strong on the Auto defense. Its all good fun though

I was just saying as an MT owner its funny to see people pay extra for the Auto then complain about it. I've driven both and the auto is not that bad, just a lot of folks on here are not happy with it. Wasn't trying to take the high ground or disrespect anyone here. Was just simply saying that if a freind was buying a Taco and knew how to drive a MT, I would strongly recommend the MT. I think this is fair right?

but I love my MT and I'm obviously biased that way.

I have been on automotive message boards for well over 20 years. The first UBB car forum was camaroz28.com. My account, which is still active, was registered in the summer of 1998. There is nothing people love to do more on the Internet than complain. I know several people that own thirdgen Tacomas and none of them have the hunting problem.

Back in the 90's people claimed skip shift was the exact same danger that OP posted about. Still waiting on that class action lawsuit lol.

Man I agree, I personally have no complaints about my auto. And I'm glad some people can have fun and not get super cereal like that one guy who thinks a new tranny costs 5k.....I've owned more MT's than auto's over the years. For me personally the auto made more sense for this truck.

25+ years ago when automatics required overhauls every 150k-200k miles or so, I would probably agree more with the "manuals are more reliable" camp, but modern day autos are just far and away better, and Aisin automatics are some of the best out there. They are seriously dependable, incredibly long lasting units.

As long as you change the fluid as described in the owners manual, aren't doing neutral drops, and don't overheat them often, they will go 400k+ miles easy, and probably much longer than that without ever needing to fix anything. With manuals, that's not the case... you've got clutch changes every 50-150k miles at $800-$1500 a pop, synchro replacements at $1000 or more, throwout bearing failures, etc. If you compare the two transmission over their respective service lives, you will almost certainly need to repair the manual more than the automatic.

So no, I don't believe the manual to be more reliable. The manual is more fun to drive, and you get more mountain man hipster style points with the manual, but that's about where it ends IMO.

Not really. I've had exactly what the OP describes happen to me. Gas to the floor and seconds of nothing, then maybe a little something, then finally it downshifts and accelerates. Toyota really did screw up the way the computer is programmed. ECT always on helps.

I've found how fast/hard you step on the pedal helps. If you are lazy with it, the transmission responds as such. Maybe its in my head.

If you're paying $1500 every 50,000 miles to replace your clutch then you deserve to drive an auto haha

I agree, in some alternative universe that defies the laws of physics it is possible for an auto to go 400K

I see the same thing. Stomp and it goes. Gentle application means I have to press down further to get the same acceleration. I noticed similar with the brakes, fast applications, even if not pressing down far into the pedal's travel, makes it lock the brakes.

Nope, I find that I get the best throttle response at part throttle at lower RPM's. And I would say that I have found that regardless of vehicle, engine or transmission.

Yep, with drive by wire they can build in logic like that. That's why I said before there more to driving and auto than "step on peddle, go", and its been this way for years.

See what happens if you go half down, then all the way down, it should kick the transmission down a gear or 2.

It’s not in your head. This may start some flames but when I wanted to tighten-up the gas pedal I put a pedal commander on. Took away all the slack. It’s easier to drive now. More user friendly. No increased power or speed. Just a better overall feel.

    where’s that fire extinguisher? :bananadead:
