My current method (after trying many):
    • Aeropress inverted method using two pre-moistened paper filters
    • Quality whole bean coffee that's been recently roasted
    • Grind for each serving with a quality steel burr grinder (like a 1Zpresso as example) to a just coarser than espresso grind
    • Water temp at ~180 degrees (verified with digital thermometer)
    • 10 second bloom, then slowly mix for about 5 seconds and press after 1 minute steep
    • Press slowly (just rest the weight of your arms over the press usually does it)
    • Top off with a little hot water if you don't want it super strong

I didn't start out as a coffee snob, honest. Just that if you're going to take the time for camp coffee, it may as well be really good camp coffee for about the same effort...

Interesting, I’m about to break out my aero press and try a lower temperature. The aero press was my second “snob” style brewing after the French press. I used to do just below boiling in those days. Now I do 195-198 depending on roast using a chemex.

There's a pretty decent range of workable temperatures (and much debate among people who debate such things). It likely depends on how you like your coffee. I've gone up to 195 and that seems to be where I just start to get the "burnt" sense from the coffee. In my limited experience a hotter temp makes a smoother cup, and a lower temp (steeped a little longer) makes a richer-stronger (yet still not bitter) cup. Considering I usually have just one cup, I opt for strength. In a lighter roast for an afternoon cup, I'd probably bump up the temp. Hard to be disappointed either way, as compared to most other methods.

Uh, pretty sure the 'big coffee chains' are the epitome of capitalism and not remotely similar to communism.

But regardless, instant coffee seems just wrong unless you are just plain desperate.

99% of coffee tastes the same to me, so there’s only two kinds: hot or not hot.
If I’m camping I just make hot water, add some instant coffee and enjoy.

I too recently switched from the Aeropress to the Stanley. Boil water in the JetBoil, wait a minute to cool slightly. Dump it over fresh grounds in the Stanely. Stir and let sit for a little while. Then press and pour. I like that the stanley lets me make enough for me and my wife at one time.

I also do the really lazy thing and buy bottles of Cold Brew from the store and keep them in the IceCo for something quick with no cleanup.

+1 for this method. I have tried everything in the past and the Aeropress gives the best quality. Get the normal Aeropress not the travel one. Frankly I don't suggest anyone to try it because you will become a coffee snob and there is no going back.

I just picked up the OXO french press that is shatterproof to test. That comes in second place but for me Aeropress still tastes better by a noticeable margin. The OXO works for me if more than 1 person is having a cup though and it's only like $20 at REI. Light, easy to clean, shatterproof, great option.

To me all other methods & gizmos are inferior. I'm done with instant packets too - even the "good" ones like Starbucks VIA taste like tree bark by comparison.

Ha, unfortunately I'm always the first one up at camp and my wife sleeps in. I end up making coffee twice! The Stanley was a great deal, I think like $20-25 at Target and yes, huge enough for two people but compact enough for packing up in a camping bin.

For backpacking/pack hunting, I use the little tea packet coffees from
    Kuju: link here:
    https://www.kujucoffee.com/collections

Just heat up some water in the old Jetboil and pour her in to my little ultralite coffee mug with the bag in it, and coffee is served.

Not reading back through the thread and someone has probably already mentioned it, but add a splash of cold water to cowboy or percolated coffee to settle the grounds. A pinch of salt will take away bitterness.

You should watch some of his other videos then, I've tried a couple of his recipes including a chili and they were tasty.
