In some ways the V10 especially in the mid range reminds me of the big Civil Defense air raid sirens of days gone by.

In the world of stock V6’s, I thought the 350Z made a nice sound. And that’s about it.

TRD is a reasonable upgrade. Or save money & turn the JBL up to 40…

Edit: R32 also sounds pretty sweet. But of course it’s almost a straight six…

they spend billions on nvh and to meet emissions more so than perfmance exhaust. because of this the exhaust is intentionally restrictive and double walled to keep the cats as hot as possible. the manifolds on these are literally down to 1" crushed tubing under the transfer case. getting rid of this paired with better scavenging of an equal length setup the 20hp gain is more than achievable in my mind. which is still under 10%

was done by 3rd party here on tacomaworld. yrd themselves have no hp claim but even if they did urd is quite well respected in the toyota world

i didnt realize that it was 3rd party. i also have an issue with the double walled exhaust you show in the post above (not a fan and have actually seen the inner pipe close up if the heat and outside conditions are right.

I like how your mind thinks, unfortunately we have to follow the laws of physics.
30+ years ago? Sure, turn the air cleaner lid upside down, add a free flow exhaust and gain 20 hp. Not now.

I am a first gen owner (3RZ-FE). Nevertheless, I might be able to share some helpful anecdotes.

I run street headers (ceramically coated; wrapped and high-temp silicone treated) and cat-back from LC Engineering, a catalytic converter from Magnaflow, and K&N FIPK cold air intake with a 1" throttle body spacer.

Shockingly, the Magnaflow catalytic converter made the most dramatic alteration in exhaust noise. I realize that sounds incredible but it's true.

If you are looking for a dramatic shift in noise then your muffler, catalytic converter (or lack thereof), and air intake will probably make the greatest difference.

Stock cats are amazingly dense inside, I can imagine any change to that would free up the sound a lot. I run a magnaflow aftermarket cat for a 95 supra on my land cruiser and man did it get louder.

i mean. i dont have anything at my disposal to prove you wrong. or me right for that matter. but if we are following the laws of physics then freeing up restriction and allowing better scavenging would be arguing on my side of things. even in the stock dump tubes theres so much restriction that going with aftermarket dump tubes will actually lose top end power without going with a dump tube specific tune. stock tune just cant compensate enough. im just gona stay positive and make myself feel better by saying my exhaust adds 20hp ahaha.

Since the ECU controls fuel and air, the ECU will compensate for the freer exhaust. It will not add jack shit until one thing happens....floor it. You then will get a few more hp, but only while it is wide open throttle condition.

You must of had very different cats than the ones I replaced on my tundra. I installed a dual flowmaster exhaust system on my tundra including 2 new flowmaster cats which look very similar to the stock ones I removed, except for the location for the o2 sensors, and heat shields. All in all even with the dual exhaust, the truck wasn't all that much louder. It had a nice deep mellow note when you stepped on it.

Based on recommendations, I went with MBRP cat back stainless steel with chrome extensions. Sounds pretty good, seems like it's gotten a bit deeper and definitely louder than it was at first.
