Ford Owners File Lawsuit, Claim EcoBoost Engine Loses Power During Acceleration

Posted by The Car Connection - Blogs and News
    on May 16, 2013M at 10:53 am

Late last year, Ford owners made headlines when they sued the automaker over inaccurate fuel economy claims for the Fusion Hybrid and C-Max Hybrid. According to the Detroit News, Ford now has another lawsuit on its hands -- this time, over its acclaimed EcoBoost engine.
The suit has been filed by three Ford owners from Ohio, who say that the company's six-cylinder EcoBoost engine is defective. The three claim that the engine has caused their vehicles to shudder and lose power during acceleration. (Our own John Voelcker noticed similar problems in a test drive of the upcoming 2014 Ford Fiesta, outfitted with a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder EcoBoost.) Two of the plaintiffs (a couple) drive a Taurus SHO, the other owns an F-150 pickup.
There are several interesting things to note about this case:

    • The suit involves only the six-cylinder EcoBoost. Ford also produces three- and four-cylinder versions of the engine, and all three variants make use of similar turbocharging and direct-injection technologies.

    • According to the lawsuit, more than 100 complaints about the six-cylinder EcoBoost's performance have been filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, though NHTSA hasn't launched an investigation into the issue, nor has Ford recalled any vehicles over those complaints. (The automaker did, however, recall 2013 Ford Escapes with 1.6-liter EcoBoost engines for an unrelated fire risk.)

    • A similar lawsuit has been filed in Louisiana. The law firm representing the plaintiffs in that case state that "Many Ford F150 EcoBoost owners have reported that their trucks have stalled, shuddered, failed to accelerate and/or entered into limp mode while driving." The firm claims that the problem is related to the Charge Air Cooler and cites technical service bulletins from Ford intended to address the problem.
Ford has yet to issue a statement about the lawsuit, but you can be sure that the automaker is looking into the matter. After all, the EcoBoost engine is slated to play a big role in the company's future.

I can vouch for this truck. Its not a repackaged dodge.

Sub'd. I certainly don't like the direction of bigger and bigger. I like the size that my '12 is right now. It seemed 'huge' when I first test drove it, comparing to my '00 ext cab.

In my mind, I sense that Toyota knows/knew that they had a good thing going with the Tacoma. As many have said, very minor changes between '05 and today. I'm sure there is a next gen in the works, but perhaps there is some fear of messing with a good thing?

300,000 trucks sold... and one person bitches. The three complaintifs don't even all drive the same vehicle... I would say the problem had more to do with they are all from Ohio.

I suspect being underpowered is a better problem to have then not being able to stop :p

Also, I thought the EPA rates MPG? I would suspect those complaining about ecoboosy mpg have leaf feet and can't stay out of boost.

I had an '05 Dodge Dakota and gave it to my son in Alaska- loved the truck. When I started looking for a replacement in 2011, I found it was the last year of the Dakota. I looked at the Ranger- too small, Canyon/Colorado- seemed very cheaply made.

I then started researching the Tacoma and bought a 2011 "Sport" version 4 door. Lots of "creature features", like the storage under and behind the seats (4 door model), like the ability to get a "long bed" with a 4 door, the composite bed (beats the hell out of a bed liner), storage bins in the bed, and the electrical outlet.

This is one great truck! I've hauled 10' X 4' pier sections, lots of lumber, refrigerators, etc, and all with three of my grand kids in a pretty roomy back seat. Got it in October 2011 and just turned 30,000 miles without any problems.

And now I'm at another crossroads- our son in Alaska and his wife have another baby coming, so they need a 4 door. I plan to drive this one up there and sell (that's parent for "just about give it away") my 2011 to him. I wish that there was more competition in mid-sized trucks, especially something with better mileage. Holding my Tacoma at 65 mph I can get 21-22 mpg, but would like better.

I'm even thinking about a "quad cab" Ram 1500. The 6cyl engine with the 8-speed transmission is supposed to get 25mpg, and although I don't need a "full-sized" truck it looks good and the price is reasonable.

    Decisions, decisions...

I tend to agree with you. I much prefer subtle progress towards reliability over overhauls towards the 'latest and greatest' . The subtle changes they made to the appearance in 2012 were nice. As we've seen around here, it was clearly enough to convince guys to go selling their 05-11's.

Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...
that L200 is different than the raider they are/were selling here. i drove one of the L200s in Kuwait and it wasnt that bad. small interior though.

if you read what Jimmyh wrote, 3 people filed the lawsuit, but over 100 have complained to the NHTSA on that specific issue. they are all about the 3.5L engine. doesnt matter what type of car the engine is in if it's the engine causing the issue.

25mpg will most likely be with a Regular Cab 2wd (hfe) on the hwy holding 65mph as you said earlier. I doubt you will beat 21-22 you get with your Tacoma now with a QuadCab 4x4.

I sat in one of the Raiders at a used car dealer a couple years ago. I had never even heard of it, but I was thinking something seemed familiar about the interor and it didn't seem the same quality as the typical Asian vehicle. When I got back home and looked it up, that's when I found out it was just a cheaper cousin of the Dodge 1500 I had just gotten rid of.

Forgive me if it's already been said. But the mid-size truck market is dead and gone already.

What we have now is full size and extra full size! My 2010 Taco is every bit as large as my old F150. Has the same tow rating to boot! Full size trucks are now stupid big.

The "mid-size" market is slowly dying in the USA and will be gone in the next 10yrs

Mitsubishi Raider was sold in US is based on a 3rd gen Dakota and was build by Chrysler, while Mistubishi Triton LV200 sold outside US & Canada is a different truck. (As Tacoma vs Hilux is...)

I spoke to a friend of a friends family who works at Toyota in Canada, and he told me September 2013 they are releasing the new 2014. come to think of it, i had the remodel in mind and i dont think he specified that.
