    Crazy...

@CS_AR isn't this the route you went?

Though since it's MC, I may get them in 6-8 months?

Last time I went in person, they had a shit ton of cool rigs parked outside.

However, walking up to the door told me they're not open to the public; there were signs up all over to just call or w.e.

Anyway, I'd hate to look at the labor to get that installed. I'd rather go rear selectable locker first, but that crawler gear does look good

Cruiser Outfitters -- Sumo from Japan. They also have another brand that is equally good they say. They also have a 10% reduction set.

I would contact Cruiser Outfitters. I think they sold out of the 3.1:1 set after I posted a story about it on Mud.

Here's the mud discussion. 80 and 100 series share the same gears.

Store front is closed but you can phone in your order and set it up for "will call"

    No, no gears

I'm fine where I'm at, sticking with 33s.

    Just lockers!

Did you put that lightbar on your car yet?

Does CDL automatically come on when you shift to 4L?

It was nice to see the option available, and reading your findings after you got it installed.

But I'll reiterate that, this LC is going to be pretty basic. I already made the mistake of going right in and buying parts left and right for other vehicles only for them to sit new in box in a storage

I don't need thousands in parts just rotting away again.

So, I've been meaning to tag Zane one of these days.

    Apparently, non-locked 80s are simply full time 4WD with a 2 speed t-case.

Then I hear of people "adding" a CDL switch which is odd to me cause I thought that'd be standard for all 80s?

Then there's the 7 pin mod which allows manual control of the CDL; that one is self-explanatory which I'll need to do one day.

Which then brings me to the silly question of...do I use CDL in the same way I would a rear locker if I was off roading? Or do I rely on my lunchbox locker to do the work and just go in 4L when needed?

Guess I'm trying to see when I should "best" use it.

Every local off-road scenario is different. Though in my situation the 7-pin mod had the most benefit. I can run around in 4L with CDL off and make sharp turns on switchbacks. There is a CDL switch that can be used as desired in 4H lo. But when I shifted into 4L CDL was on when I really didn't need it. The 7-pin mod took care of that.

I've got a full-time 4WD with rear diff LSD. The times I used CDL was on really sketchy terrain when I wanted power to be equally distributed between front and rear. Then when it would get more sketchy like rocky water crossings or extreme climbing, I would kick on the front locker. Those are rare cases usually -- but in places where I don't want to get stuck in 3.5 ft of water.

Regearing 4L to a 3.1:1 ratio was mainly for using engine gearing on steep descents. The first main use is Black Bear Pass / Colorado steep trails with a lot of switchbacks to keep from riding the brakes and to cut a point off a switchback when I would have CDL engaged. The other is to crawl down slick mud-covered rocks around here where hitting the brake causes me to lose steering control.

For me, the 4L regear was the most cost-effective placement of a mod where I'll get the most immediate benefit to keep from riding the brakes or losing control on a descent.

Most advice about regearing came from people running 35" to regear to 4.88s. With 35" comes with more aggressive fender cutting. Most there have wheel and tire combinations that are between 80 to 90 lbs of unsprung rotating mass at each wheel.

One item that I've accidentally discovered is the stock wheel and tire weight was 62 lbs. Right now on 33" tires, each wheel is at 62.5 lbs. I like the way it drives and don't want to mess it up. As far as 35" tires go, I would only add 1 inch of clearance. That won't get me through any of the deep mud holes that have been rutted out by the 40" boys. If I lived in a different place, I'm sure I would have a different perspective. So I'm at the point where I won't gain much from more changes. I just need to be happy and accept the limitations of the rig.

One other item to note is we have an 80 series in our group without any lockers or drivetrain mods Most likely on some type of Michelin Defenders and it goes everywhere we go through mud and rough terrain. Something about the weight distribution on an 80 doesn't seem to require a lot of mods to get through the ruff-stuff.

    This right here.

The number 2 reason for going into an 80 series over a 100 series is off-road capability right out of the box. That's why this thing isn't going to receive as many mods as say, the 4R did. The 4R got me in and out of a lot of places, and was very capable for being IFS, but you have to remember what all I put in.

80 is definitely a well package vehicle from Toyota. My only complaint is its poor fuel economy.

I normally don't wash my vehicles, much less shine my tires, but I figured I'd take the time to clean stuff after scrubbing the front axle of any and all grease and grime.

I've got a slow leak coming from either a hose or two and/or my power steering pump. It's gear driven and I've read it's a pain in the ass. Really, I should look into ordering new hoses and clamps to have at the ready.

Anyway, I gave her a wash underneath, and decided to wash the new tires and wheels. Didn't realize these wheels were brand new when they were recently put on cause holy shit they really cleaned up.

    20220320_113102.jpg

This whole time I thought the crud everywhere was curb rash or chipping when really every single wheel is in mint shape.
