Just hope it's cooler where you're at.

Camped in Malibu State Park for Memorial Day weekend and it was so nice having cold mornings and cool afternoons.

I'll run it for a few thousand while I order up the whole seal kit. The issue more or less is about "when" I can get it done.

It's only leaking on one knuckle which tells me it's the inner seal and not the diff breather. Still, I think I've got a diff breather somewhere so I'll replace it anyway.

Just not looking forward to the fucking mess

What grease would you guys run? I know moly is used. I'm thinking a Valvoline grease but it seems a lot of guys use Caterpillar grease.

Also, thinking I'll replace the wheel bearings with new Koyos.

There's back and forth on whether you should just use one grease for both (since they'll mix anyway) and others stating to use a different type for the birf and another for the wheel bearings.

The wheel bearing and birf grease shouldn't mix unless the axle seal fails and gear oil washes them so using separate for each is OK. The birf is supposed to be packed with 2pct moly grease. Red Line, RCV, and AMSOIL both make CV/birf specific ones but there's also a Valvoline 1pct (with moly) and 2pct (moly fortified) and Mystik option you might be able to find locally. I went with the Valvoline 1pct in part because it was the only one immediately available.

I believe the Valvoline moly fortified is rated for wheel bearings but I ran out and used the Valvoline red multipurpose grease for my wheel bearings as I have been on other vehicles the last few years with no concerns...

Which Cat grease are you considering?

If the knuckle is leaking keep an eye on your front diff oil level and check occasionally depending on how badly it leaks :)

I think that was what killed my pinion bearings

Yeah I figured they shouldn't mix; some 80 owners just expect them to so they use the same type for both the birf and the wheel bearings

As for the CAT stuff, it was Ultra 5 Moly. As industrial as it is out here, I figured I'd have no problem finding it.

Speaking of Red Line, I may still have a tub somewhere. I used that stuff to rebuild all the manual hubs I've done, including yours.

Anyway, I wanted to ask because you guys wheel so I'd want to put something that won't break down as quickly and easily over time.

Yep, had to top off again yesterday when I did my oil as some gear oil pushed out my breather.

Good thing I got that 5 quart jug the other day when I replaced my gear oil :bananadead:

I use valvoline synthetic for assembly stuff but Timken for bearings on final assembly. I’ve read like 10 different articles about grease and there doesn’t seem to be a clear answer so I go w factory grease. Idk if koyo makes their own grease.

I naturally gravitated towards Koyo bearings but it's funny that you mentioned Timken cause that's what's offered as well.

    Here's the kit.

$120 for the seals which is pretty cheap.

$205 with Timken bearings or $210 with Koyo's.

Sooner I'm rebuilding the front end, sooner I can weld on that front face armor.

some places sell timken some koyo. I got timken for my rear rebuild set and koyo for the front. Or the other way around can’t remember.

I use mobile one synthetic for all oils. That stuff does great w turbos so I always liked it. It’s a little pricey but gear oil lasts a while.

Btw, I ran out of cutting oil and started using valvoline synthetic gear oil on the drill press and it is amazing! Way better than my $10 a can cutting spray!

No oil discussion here; would hate to attract 3rd Genners.

But yeah I've always used Mobil 1 Synthetic (bottom right corner outside).

@Kwikvette if you want to look into shipping on the axle go for it. We can work something out at some point. I’ve tried selling locally and haven’t had any interest. Do you need the whole thing or just the 3rd member w the locker setup?

Ideally, the entire housing and everything included.

However, for the sake of sanity (yours) I'll just hit you up for the 3rd member and locker.

The factory housing has to be modified but I figure I'll have some luck finding an empty locker housing closer to me.

figure out shipping. Easier to put on pallet than pull 3rd. Dhl may be able to handle it.
