    Exactly.

    Off-road capability - 80 series
    Interior room - 80 series
Reliability - both, but 80 series are legendary
    Ride quality - 4Runner
    Interior comfort - both
    Gas mileage - 4Runner
    Power - 80 series

For what I wanted, and needed, the 80 series made way more sense to me. I find myself wanting, and needing, to do less modifcation to it than I did the 4Runner.

When we got suspension installed on it (stock length coils, and longer shocks) I was surprised with the amount of travel I got. We had to play musical chairs with the jack and jackstands constantly just to get the wheels up in the air.

Anyway, I haven't posted lately due to having another project.

    Copy pasted from another thread.

Little Honda GX270 that apparently had rod knock. I took a chance, mainly because I've read a lot about the shit these things go through without fail.

I do have to say, after @Abeyancer told me about the parts from Japan vs Thailand, and the cost savings, I assumed I'd just buy a bunch of new parts.

Jimmie however, was just as curious as I was in seeing just how bad (or good) this thing's condition was.

Valve cover off, gasket was mostly intact and in great shape but did have a small missing piece.

Checking valve spring clearance; I couldn't even get my feeler to fit on either the intake or exhaust!

Before further disassembly, it was time to drain the fluids. The gear reduction box had already been drained, so all I had to do was the block.

Man, this oil was old as shit. Fortunately, the only surprise I got was carbon build up; no glitter here!

Before we can go further, the reduction gearbox needs removing. This thing's setup with a wet clutch, and it looks beefy as fuck.

    The goodies removed.

Nice to see it even uses Koyo bearings, and a beefy as hell chain.

Now to get into the block.

This is where I expected to see the worst, but really it wasn't all too bad.

A little more draining, and a chance to see some bits of glitter. It's had a chance to really settle, and knowing that, I'm surprised with how little I actually saw.

Little wiping down to keep parts from dripping. I'll be hitting mating surfaces with a scotch pad, and everything inside with parts cleaner.

After some back and forth with Jimmie, we were thinking the engine wasn't looked at or disassembled by the previous owner. Makes sense, he never ran it as he acquired it through a motorcycle trade.

Looking behind the crankshaft and camshaft gear, you'll see why they thought it was knocking. I'm assuming they only ever cranked/turned it over.

    Both freaking bolts were loose!

Keeping everything TDC as disassembly continues; look how new everything looks! Especially since, according to the serial number and all, this thing is at least 18 years old!

With that all uncovered, time to get back to the head.

Pulled off the valve springs, retainers, and pushrods. The retainers were just those single top pieces, an older design as it doesn't use valve stem seals or c clips.

Best of all? Push rods are straight!

Time for the head to come out.

I will say, Jimmie called it! He was expecting carbon build up and holy shit he was right.

Thinking tomorrow I'll pull the cam gear and check the connecting rod, clean up the piston, etc. For now, got everything set aside.

That and I was slowly working on a bumper build.

It's been really hot out which is the main reason why I stopped the CAD work

Even then, tooling is the biggest hurdle. In order to cut all the 3/16" I bought, I need to get an air compressor for my plasma cutter.

Got over 16' square feet of 3/16" clean steel just for my bumper build, and that excludes the flat stock, angle, and smaller 1/8" plates/panels all inside the bins.

    20220630_061328.jpg

    20220630_061322.jpg

    Onto the CAD work.

I do plan on wrapping the bumper towards the rear of the tire.

Only thing is, I feel I should make the 'frame' of the bumper first just to get an accurate measurement of the wings that'll wrap around. That and figuring for swingout clearance.

Nothing exciting is happening for awhile

The other day I pulled the camshaft, valves, piston, connecting rod, and flywheel to get the crankshaft off.

Going to do my best to salvage it as I don't want to spend $200 for a new one :bananadead:

At least the piston cleaned up pretty well. I'll hit the rest of the stuff with a scotch pad soon.

Also, maybe I can get my RC car up and running before anything else since the pin and c clips I needed just arrived

Used to run Xray exclusively for my track builds :burp:

But yeah, Arma is good shit. I just went Traxxas for my basher cause parts are plentiful.

I've had this E Revo 2.0 sitting for a good +2 years in my storage in Salinas. Brought it over cause, why not? I need more projects.

I had a driveshaft issue, along with some missing pins and all. Got those ordered up and installed today.

Go to test it out only to hear a familiar sound of plastic scraping metal.

    20220712_140903.jpg

Fortunately, I had an extra spur gear...a metal one too.

    20220712_140932.jpg

Look how gone this freaking thing was.

    20220712_142221.jpg

    20220712_142239.jpg

Got it all buttoned up with a new spur gear, pins and circlip, and front driveshaft, along with charged batteries.

    20220712_143214.jpg

Been awhile since I've ran an RC so I'll enjoy it while it still runs

Man, this thread's so dead you'd almost think I sold the Land Cruiser

Well today was pretty much overcast all day up until the moment I get home, of course. Fucked up but at least I'm doing the prep work.

For starters, I pulled off this stupid bar behind the crossmember as well as the spare tire carrier.

    20220801_130244.jpg

I did get my steel cut as well.

Here's the kicker with that though, I don't know why one of my cardboard cutouts has a 7" wide piece for the top of the bumper when I only have 5 1/2" wide, 6" wide, and 12" wide.

With that said, I figured fuck it and used my 6" wide for the top since I allocated the 5 1/2" wide for the rear face.

Here are two 45 15/16" wide plates that'll encompass the rear crossmember.

    20220801_130253.jpg

The 12" wide by 5' piece; guess I can cut brackets and whatever else I need from it.

    20220801_130258.jpg

The remainder that I was going to use for the wings. Looking like I'll have plenty extra really.

If you notice, you'll see 3' long pieces of DOM against the corner. Thanks @El Taco Diablo for hooking it up! Definitely want to incorporate that for the front bumper.

    20220801_130304.jpg

You'll see all the damn room I made pulling that stuff off between the frame rails.

    20220801_130404.jpg

With the garage open, and the sun out I thought I'd just get some measurements and call it a day.

@Speedytech7 I'm back to not cutting off the crossmember, but really annoyed about the fact that the sides right above the frame rails are nearly 3/8" higher than the crossmember itself.

Here I got an idea of what I'll cut out from both the rear face piece of steel as well as the crossmember. I'll have the hitch go there and cut some square tubing to tie in the frame rails.

    20220801_140646.jpg

Oh and speaking of garage doors being opened, my neighbor stopped by to say hi. More like, ask if I can cut something for him

First time I get to use my own plasma cutter and it isn't even for my own project. He wanted a "vent" cut out as he's got a project of his own for this thing.

    20220801_131658.jpg

Love how easily and quickly this thing cuts.

You mean build out from the sides?

I've seen that as a popular thing, and I think about it sometimes. I just meant it bugs me that it stands up cause I want the "top" part to be completely flat on the entire crossmember.

I want to have my cake and eat it too

I'll just grind the fuck out of it off.
