Minor work = cut off old SAS

I'll be the first to admit, I'd have to take a long time to read up on geometries and learn how to use those online tools to figure out length of links, panhard, etc.

But you got these guys with their Chicago Electric welder that can't even fuse welding wire to a metal object, no math skills to save their life, and a friend to help cobble up some shackles on a part of the frame that should've been cut off for their SAS project.

Took mine mall crawling Monday, one of the boys with a sticker left a note that says they'll buy my truck for $25k. Also left me a sticker. Only if they were there when I came back.

    Sure, 25k

That's not legal here in CA is it? maybe depends on the county. I do see ads like that though from time to time regardless. But I thought the seller had to make sure it could pass smog before selling

    Not illegal.

Yeah a seller is responsible for smogging, but it's perfectly legal to sell without as many vehicles sell for different uses IE off-road use only, etc.

Just like a legally blind (or unlicensed) person is allowed to buy a car, nothing to keep him or her from owning a lawn ornament, collector, or fixer upper or whatever it may be.

I think you’re getting into a grey area. Implication is a vehicle sold for public road use is street legal (aka passes smog).

It’s certainly on the buyer to ensure it can pass smog, but I would think a seller misrepresenting a vehicle as street legal when it is not can cause some legal debate.

But if a vehicle is non-op, not much reason why it can’t be sold without a smog.

Eh disregard the law part, CA DMV does state the seller does have to smog it. I did know it was a seller's responsibility but didn't know it was by law.

However, I've never heard a situation where that law was enforced. Although I bet it can go against a seller if he or she sells a vehicle without smog, promising the buyer it will pass smog, only for it to have issues. In that case, the buyer will win a civil court case.

But there are off-road only vehicle passes that don't have the same requirements...to an extent.

yeah I see so many ads stating "doesn't pass smog, buy at own risk" or "buyer must smog" and always wondered how that was able to fly given the vehicle needs to pass smog to be sold. But I guess in most cases people either don't realize the rule, or are trying to be clear with the buyer that it's on them and hoping they buyer doesn't come back on them if they have trouble.

I would be worried that meant the seller couldn't get it to pass and is trying to offload their headache, so personally I wouldn't buy one like that unless I lived elsewhere without our smog rules.

Really I should state that, I'm not looking for an aesthetically clean vehicle as it will be wheeled.

I just want it to be mechanically sound, and would see a locker as a benefit versus perfect paint or a stupid bed rack.

Might be a stupid opinion, but why not just keep the 80 series? It’s reliable and you’ve put a bunch of work into it. I know it’s not “small,” but it’s capable and will take you what, 97% of the places you wanna go?

Cause I'm just as capable in a smaller IFS rig.

I always wanted a dedicated off-road rig, but don't want to go full ham and attempt to cut this thing out into a ute; my fab skills aren't up to that level

A small truck would be far easier and manageable, not to mention much more agile.

Dunno who that is, or what he had.

But really I didn't expect to get rid of this because I didn't expect to get a free truck so...there's that.

Plus I'm not actively trying to get rid of it. It's reliable and plenty capable; I'll still run trails with it as is.
