Hey guys I'm in need of a little assistance. My 2002 V6 Tacoma Prerunner has been throwing a P0440 code and the occasional P0442. I also did get an fuel smell sometimes after existing the truck after driving. I've been ignoring it for about a year but I got to get and emission test in 2 months so time to take care of it.
I've bought a new gas cap from the dealer and visual inspected the hoses that I can see. Cleared the code. It came back a few days later.
Took it to a mechanic to get it smoke tested, no smoke coming out and it held pressure. He did say the vent valve did not go on and off with the scanner. And recommended changing the charcoal canister. We did also find a small leak on top of the gas tank where I believe where the fuel cut off valve is. (This is what might be causing the fuel smell.) So I'm about to go buy a new canister cut off valve and gasket. Hopefully this will solve the problem.
So my question to you all is there any other possible reason for the code showing up. I'm hoping to clear this code once and for all.
Thanks for reading this and any input will be appreciated.

Was a PreRunner, now it isn't
I had this issue sort of not too long ago. No gas smell but 420 and 440 small evap leak. Well mine turned out to be the vacuum line that goes to the vsv right behind the battery that stretches across the engine to the air box. Replaced the vacuum line with fuel line and the codes have cleared and only came back once for about 20 minutes.

Thanks for the info. The hose looks fine the vsv valve is what I'm going to change next if if my charcoal canister is not the culprit.

I finally fixed mine. I replaced the damn evap box a while ago thinking that was it but the code popped again. after reading on here about the pump gasket failing i took my box off to see the top of the tank and low and behold. Fuel was splashing right out the seal where the pump drops into the tank. I took the unit out. Eight small screws i believe, vacuumed any dirt and debri, unplugged the two electrical connections, popped the unit out, used the old rubber rust filled gasket as a template to make a new one, gasket shelacked the tank, put on the new gasket, shelacked the top of the gasket and dropped the unit back into the tank. screwed it back on, reset my faults, and now it's no smelly truck.

Good to hear that. Can't wait for my parts to come in and get rid of that code once and for all
