Yeah. That is definitely what I would do first. I don't want to shoot a bear if I don't have/want to. (by want to, I mean if I had a tag for one I would shoot one, haha:D)

Wind sucks, but pepper spray isn't that bad, unless you are getting a direct hit of it, and if a bear is trying to cuddle with you in your tent and a simple shout doesn't scare it off, pretty sure that is game on with firearms at that point! and just hope you put enough lead into it's skull to drop it before things escalate...

Depends on the range, but I would say yes just because I imagine the range at which they won't is a lot further than the range of accurately hitting the bear with a shotgun, other than just relying on the odds of hitting him being high due to the number of bb's.

Not sure if that made sense... Basically if you are close enough to guarantee hitting the bear, they will likely penetrate, at least with a 12 gauge.

Forgot you have a semi auto. They pack a little less punch due to cycling the bolt (that's why most people choose single shots for trap shooting). I have a pump and the cheap little 8 shot target load I have still kicks. I put about 100 rounds down it on Mother's day with Cameron and had some pretty good bruising on my shoulder. haha

Can your 870 shoot 3.5" shells? I've shot plenty of 3" shells, but have never had the chance to shoot a 3.5" shell. My shotgun can't shoot them.

I've never seen a bear in the wild either. There aren't any around in the wild here and I only live like 4 hours from Yellowstone. haha

I vote for no bears in camp. Which means we will have to keep a clean camp and follow the backcountry rules by keeping all coolers, stoves, garbage, food related items and toiletries locked up in the cabs at night. Nothing gets left out.
