I loved my 1988 Toy truck, which turned into the Tacoma. BUT, it was a tuna can with me inside. I feel safer on my bike than I did in that truck, because I am more maneuverable. My 2017 Taco has side air bags, 1988 no air bags at all. I have crush zones. I have ABS and stability control. I have fuel injection so I don't have to pour gas in the carb to get it going if I leave it alone for a few weeks. Sure, the new truck is a pig in comparison, and I miss the 10 inches in bed length I had to give up, but the new one is soooo much more quiet, comfortable, and safe in comparison.

Good article..and as it states, it's a combo of factors including CAFE regulations, changing market, etc.
Not to get political, but I was not previously aware that Obama defined the footprint calculations for the CAFE regulations. Thanks for learning me on that bit of news. Guess he was a micro-manager.

I know it happens all the time, but it always bothers me when the government gets involved in the free market. Also, shout out to the 10 guests in this thread.

Plaid shirt and black cowboy hat are a necessity.

Good info OP. I'm always amazed at how small earlier model Tundras seem!

Me too. I was next to one at a light this week and I thought, "I think our trucks are the same size."

This is one of the reasons I bought a new Tacoma. I was in the market for an older full size and I noticed that the new Tacoma was almost as big.

I didn't really need a full size, I just wanted a truck with legroom. Win!

I had an '85 Nissan 720D back in the day. That was a compact truck of conventional design.

If i wanted a compact truck today, i'd have a Suzuki Carry imported over. My 2nd gen is the perfect no frills mid-sized for me today. Same basic size, as was my '89 F150 follow-up to the Nissan. A current full-sized truck would be just too much.

Interesting stats. For some reason the 3rd gen looks smaller than the 2nd gen to me, but obviously that's not the case. Guess its the styling.

Just for kicks I looked up the dimensions of a '74 chevy single cab short bed 4X4...

The Tacoma is a little narrower and shorter, but it is also longer in both wheel base and overall length.

so is this really a midsized truck?

That's a great question. If it's as large as an older Tundra, is that older Tundra a full size?
If we call the Taco full size, what are the larger trucks?
