Post the numbers of a new domestic full size against older domestic full sizes. Let's get to the bottom of this travesty. Also I ain't gonna google anything because I suck.

Edit: Sorry, I see some of this was already mentioned before I got caught up.

IIRC, it's mostly to do with unintended consequences of EPA regulations. When the CAFE changed to include size class, compact truck manufacturers had to choose...
    1. make compact trucks with higher MPG; or,
    2. make them just big enough to be classified as mid-size (which were allowed worse MPG)
They chose #2... probably because of the insatiable appetite the US buyer has for HP.

Now, the calculation has to do with footprint size (wheelbase X track width). The bigger the footprint, the worse MPG you are allowed. This could be the primary reason Toyota (and GM) recently stopped selling the regular cabs. Since it has a smaller footprint it would get penalized for not getting better mileage than an AC or DCSB. DCLBs, on the other hand, are beneficial to the CAFE calculation.

Ok, here's what I found: From 2004 to 2016, the smallest version of the F 150 got smaller and the largest version got bigger.

04 f 150 regular cab, short bed 4x4 / super cab, long bed
    WB - 125.8 / 163
    Length - 211.5 / 248.6
    Height - 75 / 76
    Width - 78.9 / 78.9

16 f 150 regular cab, short bed 4x4 / super cap, long bed
    WB - 122.4 / 163.7
    Length - 209.3 / 250.5
    Height - 76.9 / 77
    Width 79.9 / 79.9

And for comparison sake, I picked what I think is the closest configuration to the DCBS config on the Taco that I started this experiment with:

    04 f 150 super crew, short bed / 16 f 150 super crew, short bed
    WB - 132/145
    Length - 218/231.9
    Height - 75.5/77.2
    Width - 78.9 / 79.9

And as a reminder, here's our current Taco
    WB - 127.4
    Length - 212.3
    Height - 70.6
    Width - 75.2

You're exactly right as to why they stopped making single cabs. From what I've read, most every manufacturer will be following suit, if they haven't already. Cafe restrictions are just going to get tighter and tighter unless the current Administration puts an end to it.

I'd be shocked if they stay where they are. What's the fleet average supposed to be by 2025? Like 54 mpg? Even excluding pickups from the fleet that is a dream and a half. We're only about 7 years away from 2025 model year vehicles.

Crumple zones are another reason for size increase in all vehicles including our trucks. Thanks safety....

Look at the Nissan Z lineup.

    Look at Miatas.

Yup. From Wikipedia, "On July 29, 2011, President Obama announced an agreement with thirteen large automakers to increase fuel economy to 54.5 miles per gallon for cars and light-duty trucks by model year 2025."

Here is the chart from just below that quote. Not exactly sure how the 54.5 is calculated, but a few variations I tried came close. It could be weighted for expected sales in each category.

There seems to be footprint size missing between the small and large passenger car and small and large truck. :notsure: Either I am reading something wrong, or that is Wikipedia for you.
