I first learned how to drive a manual on a farm truck ('68 GMC). Throughout college, I drove a '68 VW Beetle. I learned quickly how to shift without engaging the clutch. Every once in a while, I will do it in my truck or my wife's '11 Corolla. Just to see if I can still do it. My wife can do it as well. She learned to drive in an old Pontiac Sunbird. I tried teaching my girls how to do it, but they weren't interested.

I just got into an argument the other night with a friend of mine about using the clutch. He said he always double clutches and/or rev matches so he can shift without the clutch because it's better for the transmission and all he said it's that way for all manual transmissions because they're all the same. He's an engineer and one of those types of people who thinks they know everything about everything. That was a fun conversation. I told him I drive my truck the way it was designed to be driven. I will rev match just to make it easier to downshift but I don't try to be Joe Race Car Driver.

probably the only "better for the transmission" part there is, is that the synchro gears don't get as worn down as they would if he used the clutch. honestly it's a trivial amount.

I'm more likely to grind the gears or mess up the shifting if I try to do it differently than I've been doing it for 20 years.
