What kind of wheeling is there down in at the panhandle? I'm out in VA right now, pretty set on moving down to Pensacola at the end of the year. Not sure if it's just mudholes down there or actual trails.

Most of the "fun" stuff from when I grew up there has been built on. Not sure what remains, but I bet you could find a trail or two out past Milton/Pace toward Jay.

Probably AL...you've got a little ways until you get to GA.

You'll find some "local only knowledge" when you get out into the sticks. Unfortunately, I can't help. Too much has changed since I lived there.

IIRC, there was a pretty long dirt road out near the gun range. That's about the only area I would think would still have some trails.

    Sweet. Thanks!!

get ready for some sticker shock when you get plates. I paid four hundred and some change. There’s an intial plate fee and some other taxes they impose. After that it’s probably 80$ a year to renew.

    Hey y'all!

So I'm from up in Virginia, and a buddy and I are headed down to the Panama City/Santa Rosa Beach area later this month for a wedding; we were wondering if there are any areas down that way that still permit beach driving/camping? Thanks in advance!

Nope. As far as I know, you'd have to head over to the Atlantic for that to be permitted. Maybe around St. George Island, but I kind of doubt it there. The sand around Panama City and Santa Rosa is soft....not like the hard packed stuff over on the Atlantic.

I had friends that made big money after beach events. People would always park with at least half their vehicle on the sand. If that was the side that the car sent power to the wheels, it was pretty much inevitable that they would get stuck. Buddies from HS would roll out with tow straps and offer to yank people out for whatever cash they had on hand. That might sound dirty/predatory, but it was pretty smart, really. Tow trucks couldn't get out there and get to everyone in a reasonable time, so they were providing a service and getting paid to do so. Point is, even with 4wd, the sand is soft enough that I wouldn't even attempt it.

Major bummer there, but I definitely appreciate you taking the time to give me a heads up. We were really looking forward to some beach camping while I was down there....but it is what it is! The will be the first time in a long time I've been far from home with the wife OR the kids

The closest location that's legal to drive on the beach is Gulf County, but non-resident beach driving permits are $300.

As @CowboyTaco mentioned, this is super soft, very fine sand. You don't even see LE/EMT drive on the "beach." They stick up close to the dunes.

If you want to go camping in the area though, Blue Springs, Sand Pond, and Econfina are all awesome. Especially with it starting to cool down this month.

$300?! Holy schneikes, that seems high. But hey, not my state; what would I know? And yeah, that the sand is super soft and sketchy seems to be the common consensus, so I will definitely heed everyone's advice there, and likely stay away. I guess we will check out those sites you recommend and see what's up!

Local resident is $30 initial and $8 annual renewal. It's really just to keep the beaches from getting overcrowded by tourists. Obviously effective hahaha.
