Posted this in another thread but belongs here in FML

I had an experience with state inspection last week. I had just bought this garage kept pappy truck and it was clean! I went over every square inch of this thing and knew it inside and out.

So I had farm tags on it cause it's cheap but they have a 25 mile radius limit from the farm. I wanted to go camping at Assateauge, so took it in for inspection. I park and the mechanic comes out looking like Boss Hogg from Dukes of Hazzard giving me and my truck stink eye. I get a bad feeling but thought "Hey, they're just looking at it right?" WRONG...

So they come back out and cheerfully declare that "Truck has failed for 2 cracks in the windshield over 1 inch and a bunch of chips" WHAT!?!? So I go out to look at the truck and sure nuff' 2 big chips right in the middle of the windshield and small chips all over the front of the truck. Get into a shouting match with the mechanics after they told me I was crazy and to GTFO when I said windshield was not like that when I dropped it off. So I left.

Get home and take a look around the truck. These guys were devious in the way they damaged things here and there, things that aren't apparent at first glance. They had the truck 2 hours and took their time with it.

First thing I noticed was *Slice in pass door upholstery*
    [IMG]
*Rubber bumper in glovebox has been sliced off so it does not sit flush + looks like hinge bent*
    [IMG]
*Giant hole bashed in the gbox*
    [IMG]
    *Drivers side seat piping sliced*
    [IMG]
    *Popped clips off door trim*
    [IMG]
*Scuffed up all the plastic trim*

    Moving outside
    *Chipped/Cracked windshield*
*Cracked turn signals and Side markers*
    *Scratched up bumpers*
    *Ballpeen hammer to the muffler*
*Beat the inside of the tailgate with a rubber hammer resulting in dents facing out, looks like egg is popping out of the tailgate*

This happened to me over the past 48 hours and it seems like it might fit in here.

I've been waiting for some parts to come in for a few months now and this past week they finally did. It's a pretty good sized project and I'm still recovering from four broken ribs so I asked my dad in North Carolina if he'd be able to help. He happily agreed and cleared the upcoming Monday-Wednesday off so we could get it done. This past Thursday morning I told my boss I'm going out of town the next morning (Friday morning) and I'll be back in a week. He's cool with it. Thursday afternoon about 4 he calls and asks if I can do an overnight job for another operator. It would be from midnight to about 8am. The other operator is always good to me. He usually pays me 4x what I normally make as soon as the job is done, in cash. I figure I can do the job, crash out at home until noon or so and get on the road without too much trouble. I'll just cut my sleep stop in half and up the cruise control a bit.

I agree and last night I do the job. It's high stress, requires constant focus, the only breaks are to refuel, it's pitch black, and I've got power lines right at eye level half of the time. This is sunrise

At 830, after finishing everything up, I'm ready to leave with cash in hand feeling pretty wiped out. I'm running on nothing but adrenaline and 2 hours of crappy sleep. I just want to go home, crash out, and hit the road for the 20-hour+ drive.

That's when I get the text from my boss. In January he organized a field trip for a bunch of high school kids to come to our airport as part of a career day. I didn't know anything about it. He told the school he'd give a presentation, show them our helicopters, answer questions, blah blah blah. But now I have to do it because he's boarding a plane to Vegas for the next week.

    FML.

I ended up staying at work another 7 hours and ad-libbing two presentations that I honestly can't remember.

On top of that I'm at least 24 hours behind schedule. My dad was kind enough to take 3 days off to help out and now he'll have wasted one of those days. We're on a time crunch now as well so he doesn't have to take another day off if we can't get everything finished in time.

    C'est la vie.

I think we should retire the thread after that story.

Why didn't you tell your boss "tough shit" & go about with your plans? That was his doing, not yours, so he should deal with it.

100% agree and gave it very serious thought. The answer is complicated but the short version is I'm the primary pilot and the most senior. I get a lot of perks but that means I also deal with the most bullshit.

This will be my last summer with the company though. I'll do one more season of rice pollination and move to a better paying job.
