that's because the new hilux isn't a truck...its like ridge line or an avalanche just built for the street.

I've spent a lot of time in Latin America and I would do just about anything for a Hilux...

I don't think I agree. I got to drive one over seas and It is all TRUCK, despite it's Honda high side panels. The review says it all though, the Ranger is a new design, the Hilux is 8 years old.

The Tacoma doesn't quite match up to the competition for features / electronics and engine choices either. I still love mine though. (even with a bum clutch)

Hoping that Toyota sends a small diesel our way some day.

The Hilux I drove in Costa Rica was most definitely a truck. Though no in a million years would I trade my Taco for one. I have also owned a Ranger. Wouldn't trade my Taco for that either...

All of those trucks were the over seas versions, and the newer versions. If you compare the american versions the taco wipes the floor with them all. Overseas the market is different and their vehicles are certainly more car like, even their trucks. Not to mention as the article says the ranger is all new (unlike the american ranger which got scrapped) and the hilux is an older design. IMO, the taco is more rugged and off road worthy than the new hilux, which has changed to suit the overseas market.

x2, the older hiluxs were bad ass, but they have been "europeanized"

All I can say is VW makes cars that don't last (aside from the beetle) so can you even imagine what that faux truck would be like with 100k miles or how much it would cost to fix...fing joke.

Interestingly, in this review they don't tow or haul anything, nor care too much about fuel economy. In theory, if you lifted an American Tacoma into the comparison test, it would probably win the thing with its better interior and better on-road performance.
