    Really, if you satoshied, put the cooler in front of the hood latch. You could put two small fans on the backside of the cooler as pull fans...thats probably about as bad ass of a cooling setup you could get..

    that said, i think you're overly paranoid about this. I have seen my dad abuse the SHIT out of his tranny and the temps hit 270+ all the time. Hasn't been an issue yet.

    So i think really, you're fine and just over thinking and worrying way too much about it.

    It's less Tacoma and more mod
    I thought the auto tranny Tacomas had an A/T Temp light. Wouldn't it stand to reason it would have tripped if there was a high temp issue. Maybe your CEL was from a bad temp sending unit.

    Or was it the A/T Temp light that went off, I never heard the story.

    As I said earlier, the new cooler helped a lot. Before the cooler I used to see 235-240 and it would take a lot for the temps to come down from that. On this last trip, it never got to 230. Saw 228 a couple of times and it didn't stay there. But I still could not run in 4hi and 4lo limits my top speed to about 30 mph.

    I think 5.29s would fix everything. :D

    If the AT temp light comes on..your tranny fluid is 300º...which means you've officially cooked your tranny and you have serious issues.

    Why did toyota do that? no idea. Should be like 250º but for whatever reason they set it stupid high.

    But hey. If you wanna drop a grand and a half on new gears do it! But you'll never be allowed to lead the group again...since your top speed will be like 25 in 4 lo...haha

    I don't see the point to going to 5.29s unless you get a slightly bigger tire. A 305/70r17 or comparable.

    Wow that's a very high tripping point, seems like they would know better than that. At the very least your fluid as lost all lubricating properties by that temp.

    From what I have read, temps above 250*F begin to damage the fluid. The longer the temp is that high, the faster the fluid is damaged.

    The Toyota idiot light is exactly that. If you wait for that light, you've already incurred permanent damage to the fluid.

    5.29s would reduce the load in 4hi. Less load, lower fluid temps.

    That said, i wonder how modern day synthetic fluids perform compared to the fluids that where out when our trucks where made.

    But not by a lot. AND you would be at 3500rpm or higher for 70mph with your current tires. So kiss your precious MPGs good bye. You can be like me :)

    Currently at 2500 rpm at 70. No way I would be at 35oo with 5.29s. I am guessing it would be around 2800.

    Monte, what fluid do you use in your manual tranny? Mine has been getting a bit notchy and I was gonna change the fluid before it gets cold.

    No im gonna say that you'd be at 3k at 75. Or just under 3k. not 2800.

    Where is Ben..im sure he could math geek it up in here and tell us based off the 2500 at 70 @m3bassman

    I have never changed it myself honestly. I got a full fluid change done at 109k miles when i did the timing belt and water pump. I had the dealer do it as i was in HS still and it was my DD. After i got the $760 bill i said FUCK that and have never let a shop touch it other that alignments. haha

    Id assume its just toyota OEM though..

    No problem, I guess anything I put in will be better than the stuff that's in there. I have no maintenance records from the PO so as far as I know the stuff in there came with it off the assembly line. Maybe I'll try some Amsoil GL-4 75-90

    i think it has to be GL 5...

    yea i mean..technically..Frank only has 127k on the OD...which is way wrong because of over geared drive line..so probably more lik 123k...haha
