Aw to bad. My ecu got wrecked from corrosion and I've just been looking for the same part #. I'm confused if I can use different ecus or not?

You can, especially because Toyota had a different one out almost ever 3 months. There is really only one thing to pay attention too(other than the obvious that it needs to be for the same motor and tranny).

You gotta make sure the connectors are the same. They changed roughly around the same time the sub gens came. So 95-97 have a connector set, 98-00 has theirs, and 01-04 have their own.

There is some overlap though so gotta be careful there, like I said, they had a new ECU every 3 months basically.

So as long as the connector is the same, and the drive train is the same for what you need you're fine. So you'll need something around the same year as your original basically which is safe to play for emissions stuff too which changed in 03.

What year are you looking for? Id assume 98-00 as the ecu you asked about fits that connector type, which is why I sold it as I needed the 95-97 type.

Wow, thank you for clarifying this. It's been tremendously hard to find that part. Yeah i drive a 98 manual 4x4 3.4 L V6 x-cab. Is there a list of ecus compatible with my truck I can find somewhere? I also read that I have to reprogram the ecu to my VIN #, or is that all wrong?

You can't reprogram a thing on our ECUs so should have to worry about that.

I don't have a list exactly no. I was using a website at one point that listed the PN and the production dates of the ECUs. Can't remember what it was though, will look later though.

I've been in a turd gen for almost 2 years now, and I still keep coming back to the 1st gen builds hoping I'll see Frank back in action.

No way really? Damn left the 1st gen eh?

And fear not. He will return. I have plans. And some of those plans are a garage to house and work on frank!

    This makes me happy!

Honestly what finally got me out of the 1st gen after 17 yrs was the fact that I'm just tired of having to fabricate every little thing. Whereas the 2nd and 3rd gens have an incredible aftermarket. And with companies like OVTune and JD fab, the 3rd gen is actually a great truck.

That's true. That's enough to make me look at 2nd gens. But not a 3rd gen. Haha

I get it. I was actually in the market for a 2nd gen, but the prices made the 3rd gens more acceptable. With a proper tune, and a bit of hardware, I'm super happy with what I've got. I was really worried about buyers remorse, especially given how long I had the '96. But I can honestly say that the old girl is just a pleasant memory now and im stoked to move forward.

Well that's good. All that matters really.

I still kick around daily in the SX single cab and weekends in Igor. Love them both.

I'm more looking forward to a fullsize next if anything for heavy work I'll need but also just size and comfort. Will see how that turns out.

Needs change as we move through life, there's no getting around that. We just have to keep up with the changes.

In any event, I hope things work out for you and Frank. He was an inspiration for my 1st gen build, and a lot of that has transferred into my 3rd gen build. Keep up the good work

Thanks man! I don't plan on throwing in the towel that's for sure. Hope the third gen treats you well!
