Devil's advocate coming from a DOD acquisition/supplier role: Just because you use it as a govt employee, doesn't mean it is the best or safest.

Wyeth MPP vs come-along. Good 2 part review from a private loggers perspective. The 2nd vid shows you how the unique double-ratchet lowering mechanism works to prevent the problems you get with a Tirfor or come-along handle smacking you. This double-release ratchet mechanism allows the spool to release only one ratchet-length at a time, so lowering or releasing tension is very safe.

See minute 5:00 of the below vid to show you how you do this. It is this safety feature that differentiates the MPP from other devices.

Ugh, sorry - this is going in the wrong direction fast. I was intending to first point out that a Griphoist works well, but it also costs 4x more than the Wyeth-More. Unless someone knows what they’re doing, getting a used Griphoist is also a bad idea too due to the internal mechanicals of the GripHoist. Yea, its heavier than all you know what too, but it can pull 100’ of cable which most spool-type winches cant. But its a beast. That Wyeth-More has a lot more pluses than a GripHoist for offroading, but for major recoveries or rescues where you are dealing with long-pulls, it wouldnt be my first choice. I almost went with a Wyeth-More too, didnt get a Griphoist either, instead I went with a reciever hitch tray mounted Warn so I can pull from front or back, and a PullPal anchor for self recoveries where there are no tree anchors. If I drove a lot where there were trees to anchor from or I was in a group, that Wyeth-More would be pretty sweet!

If it wasn't dark I'd take a picture of my pile of come-alongs, it's laughable. I absolutely despise using them, but the number I've accumulated speaks volumes to how many times I've needed one. (or more)

Thanks for the post, I might just toss three or four out of the pile out by the road for the locals to scavenge and replace them with one of these.

I've considered this as well, only thing that's held me back is I haven't really needed one yet and the reviews indicate manufacturing quality isn't quite what it used to be. I'll still probably end up with one at some point.

As someone who uses come-a-longs on a regular basis, if you are smacking yourself in the face releasing it I'd recommend finding someone to show you its proper use.

I agree that these are nice. Some are aware some are not. But the hi jack lift or Farm jack can basicly do what a come along or winch can do. Just need, chains, straps, wire rope etc... just for the sake of discussion, a hi lift can be used as a lever, cheater bar, winch, jack, spreader bar, ladder, support to drive over a small crevis ( within reason) can be used in emergencies to rip open sheet metal lots of uses.
I carry a small come along and hi lift jack. The electric winch is a luxury in my mind for screwing around in mud.
