    I remember when I began a PC class in '99 the fastest CPU was the P2 (vertical slot) at 350Mhz & the biggest HD was 3Gig IIRC, by the time I finished (about 8 months later) CPU speed was at the 1Ghz level & HD's were into the 10+Gigs..

    Since the school was Microsoft cert. we saw the preview of
    Windows 2000 a few days before the releasing to the public..

    I've been a CompTIA cert. tech since '99

    The battle to break 1Ghz was fast and furious.
    I had an Athlon (Slot-A) 750, and I actually downgraded to a 700 because the FSB was more favorable to overclocking.

    I got that thing running 3D-Mark dead stable at 1.2Ghz

    HA!, nice , yeah once a Ghz CPU was reached AMD started walking away from Intel for clock speed, AMD's lived to be tweaked & over clocked, hell they ran hotter than Intels anyway, the Intel CPU's weren't over clocking friendly on any level, try to bump them up pushing more juice thru them resulted in bad boots, no boots, hangs, blue screens of death, etc;

    And now its almost the opposite. The TDPs on Intel's are much higher than AMD. My AMD hits 55 and it will lock up.

    I started on a TRS-80 in high school. I still have the tape of my F to C conversion program in a box somewhere.

    I also worked on an HP mainframe in college. I remember building a bubble-sort routine to organize my vinyl record collection. I locked up the entire campus for about 1/2 hour with that sort. Had to kill it off at 98% completion.
