So I ordered 4:10s from ECGS. Once installed I will probably be going with 31's for tires. Anyone have this set up? I am thinking the 4:10s will move the 31s well. I still want to be able to cruise on hwy at 75mph. Tire calculator says I will be running at 2900rpm at 65 but I am thinking it will be more like 2500 in 4th gear. With the 235s and stock rear at 65 I am around 2200.

Replying to my own thread. Why not?IMG_20170509_112123.jpgSo it looks more like 2k at 65 so I am looking forward to see what the difference is.
Now I am going back to Pasti dipping.

Are you actually going 65 tho? Or is that just what the speedo says? Check with a GPS app.

I'm going to go with 4.56's and a 31.5" tire, it's not a highway cruiser or a daily driver though.

Yes I have checked and the speedo is very close to the GPS with 2 mph. I am more of HWY cruiser. Will be taking it on trips in the future.

Nice, I'm currently running 33s stock gear. I'm doing 4.56 soon and installing my LockRight.

My Tacoma runs 1950 RPM at 70 with 30.5 inch tall tires. If I regear I will effectively correct the speedometer and odometer and put the gear ratio back where it should be or within 1%.

What other benefits would there be to regear? More power? Better gas mileage?

Regearing won't fix our speedometers. The only Tacoma Speedometers that get changed by regearing are the 6Speeds because of where they calculate speed from. Our trucks calculate from axle revolutions.

Better performance in general. Engine will not work as hard to accelerate and power will be restored to near factory spec. If you run 245/75R16 a 4.10 will bring you back into spec for the final drive ratio and effectively correcting the speedometer and odometer.
Basically 245/75R16 tires are used on the Prerunner trucks and they use 4.10 gears with a 4 cylinder engine. Same transmission as well. Hopefully that clears things up.

Depends on what you want out of it. But mainly it's to move the gearings to it's most optimal powerband(Proper amount from Low-end/High-end). More power? No, but you will get your torque(Low-end) back, which means faster acceleration. MPG? Depends on what your daily commute is like. If it's highway speeds, your MPG will actually go down since you're revving at a higher RPM constantly. City could potentially be better.

I just want the acceleration back. My truck struggles to crawl up mountains because of the area I live in. Also might as well too, since I'm throwing a locker in.

Yes and no. If you regear the axle the percentage of change in revolutions per mile will be close or equal to the upsize in tire diameter. So going from 215/70R15 to 245/75R16 would require a change in gearing of about 12.6%. Going to a 4.10 from a 3.58 would do exactly that.

Edit: Unless the truck uses the ABS sensor in the front. If that's the case no change in the speedometer and odometer would occur.

All true but MPG in my case would go up some. At 70 my engine is going 1950 RPM and engine load is 40%. If I regear the engine load will drop and the engine should run more efficiently.

Thanks. I asked because I have 30.5" tires, as well (265/60/18) with a 4-cyl engine and the stock gears. Going up to 4.10 is beyond my budget right now. However, I'm considering a header to get me closer to spec for acceleration. Not sure if that will work, though.

It will help but may not give you the results you think it will yield.

Simple question. Do you do any wheeling/Towing?

    Yes? Regear
No? Spend your money on something else

Regear helps in passing power. More torque equals better acceleration. Lol.

If your steady on the interstate then it's not really needed.

Yeah, that's my concern. The only issue I have with my truck is the lack of power when accelerating on an incline while on the interstate, especially when I'm on the onramp. The problem is -- I don't recall the amount of acceleration power my truck had when it was stock. I only had it stock for a day or two before I switched out the tires about 8 months ago.

Personally I plan on regearing the truck but with my mileage I plan on doing new axle bearings, axle seals and 3rd member bearings. All Koyo or Timken bearings.
