Propane tanks are only pressurized to a point, they have little blow off valve to release extreme pressures. I get my tank filled up at a propane station and talked to the owner about painting the tank.. he said yea thats fine as long as its not a dark color, the dark color will attract heat and build pressure in turn releasing it possibly letting the propane to be released. No federal law as far as I know except for commercial use caring bulk they need a placard. I drove for 3 weeks on a cross country trip last summer and had not trouble from the law carrying propane or extra fuel on the bumper.

 

Yes, but they are not mounted OUTSIDE the bumper. If any vehicle with any height were to impact the truck, the first things hit will be a propane tank and a gas can. No law really necessary. Just common sense

 

Look up the accident Bobby Hurley had in an old Chevy pickup. Plus I have had to put out a fire burning due to fuel line rupturing in an accident. Even if you carry those things safely in a vehicle in an accident you could still have issues.

Whats the ignition source? Just crash and there is to much leaking to set off.

 

Same here. Once we shot a 1lb little camping propane tank trying to get it to explode. Just flew up in the air and came down covered in ice.

 

Transporting commercial has to be labeled if over 1001 lbs. Under no required, so the bumper is fair game

 

What is your point? You sound like the designer of the Ford Pinto. I never said cars and trucks don't catch on fire. I'm saying putting explosive or flammable liquids/gases on your bumper is asking for trouble. A family rear- ends your truck with their minivan and that shit ignites in their faces, you want to live with that? Go right ahead. It's better off secured inside the bed where it has some protection from impact

No I'm just saying no matter how you carry anything shit happens so even secured it can come loose and ignite, rupture, or turn into a projectile.

 

The reason I say this, this happened not 300 ft from my house, truck ran off road and hit a propane tank at this house. You can see the aftermath.

Yeah, was like a 300 pound one. It exploded so bad it blew the foundation vents out of my house at 300 ft away. Sadly the elderly couple that lived there died. It was a scary sight. I honestly thought someone had ran into my house which is well off the beaten path. Thats how big the shockwave was. Video was only 59 seconds....lol

 

Shhh, I’m lazy that is very scary though and a tragedy that it happened.



I will say that I’m not worried about mounting it on my bumper. It will only be there when I go camping which is maybe twice a month, so the likelihood of anything happening is negligible IMO.

 

They don't go by lbs for home use they go by gallons then.
