Well short story long it was an idea born out of circumstance, seeing a related product and also seeing the idea kinda right in front of me, and had everything needed in the garage so it was basically a free mod.

Disclaimer: This is not the cool thing to do. Just something I thought would help through travels.

To start, while my wife and I were on our cross country trip we entered a national forest in Wyoming. Thirty mins after entering the trail head we came across a Ford F-250 with box trailer stuck in a deep drift. I winched them backwards out of it but they were persistent in going forward so they hit the drift again, making it a little further but stuck. Winched again from above after getting through the drift myself. Note this guy was tickled to see a Tacoma rescue him. I was quite a distance above him and nobody was really helping me with this recovery I was pretty much solo doing it. It started becoming last light as the sun went behind the mountains. I was a few feet short of getting the d ring on his truck so I yanked a few more feet of line. Hooked it up and spoiled with my remote. Nothing. Went to my truck and saw I yanked the set screw out of the drum. After some time I got the winch to take in some line. I had to winch him several more times through the drift and we parted ways. Till he found our camp and dropped of a bunch of firewood for helping him and his family. I got home from that trip and decided to fix the winch line and set screw. Knowing you have to keep five wraps on the drum at minimum of a pull I marked that with red electrical tape like a warning to stop taking line off. It will also help in the future if I’m hooking something up away from the truck and my wife is near the winch I could tell her “let me know when you see the red tape” rather than “let me know when there’s five wraps on the drum”, she won’t reall know especially if it’s dark.. The idea for the light came from that recovery, wondering if it was any darker than dusk how would it have went down, would I have still been able to get the drum reclined without the set screw, not to mention see the line spool so it didn’t jam or bind on one side.. That said, throwing caution to the wind I’m sorta anal at reeling in the winch line trying to keep it even on the drum. I have several videos where I standing at the winch and leaning into the line to evenly spread the line out, I can’t help it. So than in a group chat HomerTaco shares a grill he was doing with amber marker lights. I was thinking I could do something like that if I wanted cuz I still have my BAMF grill light bracket mounted. I previously just had my winch solenoid mounted on it. What finally finalized the idea was while I was winching a gazebo out of my yard to the driveway cuz it had come with our house when we bought it but we had found a buyer that wanted it more than we did. It was at night after work and I was having trouble with the clutch. The light from the headlight was giving me a little room to see inside the bumper but not really. Everything hit me and I was like “would be awesome if the winch was lit up and I can see what I’m dealing with.. after about a month or so of the idea being born.. some free time and material I made it happen. I don’t see myself using it a lot but the times I do use it winching at night it will be very helpful. I can see the line spool in/out, see the clutch easily, and take notice when I get close to pulling all the line off the drum all at night. Not all winch recoveries are done during the day at the offroad park. I keed I keed.. :p

Didn’t know it was gonna be a heated topic. I apologize.

Pic of the rescue in Wyoming bekuz... Well because we can all appreciate a taco pulling a full size truck, and trailer.
