No aluminum. And here's the only hinges, and gas struts to lift the lid (blue).

Probably a good idea. What are we gonna do when @HCJ moves? We'll have to find a new painter!

How come? You might save 15 lbs, but at a more expensive cost and a harder time connecting it. You'd have to rivet it or something. I wouldn't imagine that'd be as sturdy.

that looks good. how do you plan to attatch to the bed? Me thinks it should at least have feet on the bottom of the legs if you dont plan on securing the "rack".

    aluminium can be welded

I'd likely just weld some tabs on a few of the feet, and just bolt it straight through the bed. Simple, but effective.

I don't want something as heavy as your current setup. I want to rivet it or just bolt to the top. Ill have cross bars.

Well yeah, me neither. My current set up is very heavy. Part of why I'm redesigning it.

That's exactly what I was thinking. You wouldnt want it sliding around.

Are you sure? I'm not. And why mix the metals anyway if your going to use aluminum.

@EatSleepTacos and i figured it out. Its just brittle.

Mixing metals to save weight, is my reason. Not all steel. Also, my setup needs to be weatherproof. Randy has a cap, so he can use wood.

You could use wood too, and just seal it. At least for the top part. And even if it fails in two years, you’re only out a few bucks for a new sheet of plywood. Unbolt old and bolt on new.

Now figuring out how to weatherproof the drawer will be more difficult.

Also we welded aluminum to steel with flux core wire. It was like a double no no, hence the super porous, brittle nasty weld.
