Yea but if the new guy gets a #RANDYFAB decal before me I'm not ashamed to admit - there will be tears.

hahaha damn this seems like a little more than a build thread huh. i bottomed out my suspension yesterday and was trying to figure out how to beef it up (lift is definitely in consideration) but im on a tight budget. im in highschool so everythings a tight budget but id definitely have to make some money before i do anything. idk how far $1000 would get me, but that is a shitload of money for me so im not tryna spend much more than that. im new to the suspension world so i have no idea where to start. ive got 265s on (cooper discoverer a/t3) and theyre brand new so i dont wanna lift so much that they look too small.

i dont offroad a ton, because breaking parts is scary when you cant afford them... but i do like to so itd be nice to have a little more clearance.

anyways- whats the most reliable setup without dropping a bunch of money? doesnt need to be extreme, but 2-3 inches of lift would be sweet as well.

    thanks!

    Hey Emmett,
$1k may not buy you a complete lift kit but it will help to keep you from bottoming out. I'm sure the guys in here will be able to help.

    Welcome Emmett!
Man you can get all you want with a decent set up for $1000 Bilsteins front and rear and an add a leaf and that'll get you the 2-3" you desire. Then you can upgrade other things along the way as you have the money.
Contact @HeadStrong Off-Road Marie will hook you up! You can get their basic Billie suspension kit with either a deaver single leaf AAL or their 3 leaf AAL and be under 1000
    https://www.headstrongoffroad.com/store/p452/HS_Coil/Bilstein_5100_kit.html

    Things to upgrade later.
Front springs to OME (Headstrong may be able to get you into these for your budget now)
    Rear U-bolt flip kit
    Bumpstops front and rear

From the initial to what I listed upgrading to later the sky is the limit of what you can do to these trucks and what you want out of your truck. What you are looking at doing is a great start and can get your feet wet so to speak and see how far you really want to take it.

I'm currently running the Tacoma Gen2 T/X Baja front suspension on my '17 but I need a little more lift/boost because of the bumper and winch I installed.
I've had this installed less then one year. As long as the struts fit Emmett's '06 I'll sell them to him for $450(?) shipped. These are Bilstein 5100s, 650# spring rate coils, 1/4" drivers side Taco lean spacer, and KYB top mounts. I'd leave them assembled so all he'd have to do is bolt them on. Then all he'd need to get is an AAL kit ($140) and he'd be set. Although he may want to replace the rear shocks too ($166 for 5100s standard length). Hell, he'd have a new, complete, lift for $656.

AAL kits are tough; even progressive AALs if the current leafs are flat or negatively arched. At that point they are all but a bandaid. For now, I would say go with the AAL and the new rear shocks and whatever is left over, start saving for new leaf springs.

Yes, you can get away with a single or progressive AAL kit for a while, but, eventually, they will wear too and you're right back where you started. I installed a single 2" AAL at 5k towed the family pontoon once and I started to sag. I replaced them with Dakars at 8k and was much happier. The Dakars ride better too. My .02.

thats tempting but i also have to learn more about this stuff before i commit. my winter job is also snow removal so we need some more storms to come in first as well! also, how much would your setup lift the truck?

thanks for all the help everyone! i definitely want to toughen up the back a little so i can load it up and not worry about it, but i dont want to kill ride quality either. apparently the 5100s are a great setup and id like to find more info on those. are they only a set height when u buy them or are they adjustable? will those require new springs and leafs?

    thanks!

The front 5100's are adjustable via spring perch but you're just adding preload which affects the ride quality. It would be okay for stock coils but something like OME coils which actually lift the front end would be best set at 0 on the 5100's. Otherwise you add too much preload which causes the shock to fail.

The rears are not adjustable. The leaf spring provide the lift in the rear and coils provide the lift in he front. Shocks are just dampeners to control the ride quality
