I been in the field over 25 years now. Back when you really pulled a chain for field measurements and used a linker rod for level loops....lol

How does one get a surveyor license? How well does it pay?

School, more school....and then some intense testing.

Pays better if you own your own outfit.

I'm neither an SIT (surveyor in training) nor an RPLS (registered professional land surveyor)

I just do all the work for those people

What did you used to do? I need to start figuring out my second career, so if there is schooling required I can get it over with beforehand. I have been thinking about going back to school to become an X-ray Technician. But still can't decide. Nothing really speaks to me right now (if that makes sense).

Nice! Once my kiddos are older and able to be out on the water alone in a kayak, I plan to invest in one for each member of the family. Some of my fondest memories out on the lake are from my days in a float tube. Kayaks are just the evolution in the chain. Can't get more in touch with nature than in a kayak on a lake that is glass, casting out a lure or bait or just floating!

This is what I will likely end up with!

Some community colleges offer an Intro to Land Surveying class that will get you started. Plan to spend at least a couple years in the field before taking your LSIT test. You can still be a party chief without it tho. Pay is dependent on state but in Cali they were making upwards of 50 bucks an hour. I always found it best to be somewhat of a visual learner as you can see what is being described unlike getting hung up in formula's etc.

It was a great stepping stone for me in my career path as you actually learn all the facets of construction from rough grading up to final monumentation. Fastest way to get in, look for surveyor want ads looking for either a rod man or an instrument man. Technonlogy does most of the work for you now but they will teach you how to keep notes, do the math, etc.

Thirdly, if you live in a state with lots of greenery and vegetation, look for something else to get into. If you cant see thru it, you have to take a bush axe and make a sight line. This is not fun, pleasant or anywhere near exciting.

It is awesome to work with! But a little heavy and too big to position anchor bolts in forms lol

All the surveyors I've met always ask me questions about my equipment and how I like it and blabla and take pictures to show their boss what they "need" now haha

I did my surveyor learning while at college for a diploma in Civil Engineering. I had survey class for 3 years and learned how to calculate coordinates by hand using the degrees the station give us. But as soon as you stop doing it by hand you forget and rely completely on the station:anonymous: i do know how to trouble shoot myself lol and I better do because I am the only surveyor in the business!
