Just a shot in the dark. It will look pretty nasty if it's really old brown/black and inside the MC reservoir would usually be some nasty sediment.

It’s just annoying because I can’t shift in and out of Low on the fly.

My guess is on them just not being adjusted properly. I think FSM states to tighten it up to the point you can't rotate the tire, then back it off 15 turns. That's what @buyobuyo said/did and says it works great. But I dunno how tf you're supposed to back it off.

    edit: Yep, here we go

That’s what I did. I read the same thing. I tighten it until it I couldn’t rotate the drum then I back off 15 clicks. But they were very loose as you could tell.

Yeah. I guess just tighten them up some more and see if that helps. May just take a little trial and error. Worth the effort though since brakes are kinda important.

I keep my truck in 4L when offroading. I am talking about the shifter put it all the way down into 2 (or second gear) then slap it over to the L when you decend and then back to 2 when you are done. I don't see why it wouldn't let you do that while moving since all that is doing is moving the manual valve in the transmission.

He's talking high range and low range in the transfer case. He has the FJ case so he can do 2wd low range.

Still I am talking the transmission not the Tcase. 2 for normal driving slide over to the left for 1st gear then you get engine braking from the auto.

I know what you're referring to. The hill we're talking about that smoked his brakes was the windy pavement one leading up to the overlook. On the way down is when he cooked his brakes. So next time down he dropped it into 2wd low range to avoid that. I'm sure joe was in 4wd low range on the steep descents on the dirt.

Yea. On the trail it’s not a big deal cause I’m already in 4L. But the day I smoked my brakes I was engine braking with just the transmission and it wasn’t really helping that much. It’s a pretty steep hill and I only have a 2.7L. That hill was just dragging me down.

Ah gotcha yeah that's P1. I rode that in 4h and still had it 1st gear. Got a hard learned lesson in Mountain driving when I was 16 being yelled at by an Ex drill instructor the whole time about what I am doing wrong and how to do it so not to cook your brakes. That has stuck in my head since.

Wait what?????? You don't have the 4.0. Yeah you are really at a disadvantage. Ummmmmmm I don't know what to tell you to help then. Yeah now I see your engine braking difficulties hmmmmmm upgrade to the 5th gen 4runner front brakes and drop the big coin for the SOS Performance (of no relation) rear disc conversion set up and the sequoia MC.

That's on my short list of things to do, upgrade the front to 4runner brakes. They need replacing anyways.

Haha yea. It doesn’t have enough balls to go fast and it doesn’t have enough grunt to slow down. Imagine that.

Yeah I'd like to as well. B has a soft pedal even with the shoes adj really tight. Others have complained about this as well. I would suggest doing this when you do. I think a bigger MC is needed as well personally.

Oh that’s good to know. Maybe I’ll just do rotors and pads and stock replacement calipers. Being as light as I am I really don’t NEED larger calipers.

Yeah I think just the volume of the pistons in the 5th gen runners is too much for our MC. Now you could do the gx470 calipers and have a little more without needing to do the MC. Plus you can still run the stock backing plates I believe if you wanted or are still.

Thanks fellas for your patience with the noob. I got the bug, just newer to the game.

Yeah your right, too much going on in my head, I got 1.25" spacers. I like the way the cut fenders look, so I'm going that route, but thanks for the comment 2.5" is extreme.

My goal is no rubbing at all. Is there wheel specs or other things you would recommend to accomplish this? If not, I will take the advice of not worrying about the "later work" now, pull the trigger, and do what I need to do to make it work. Again the issue I forsee is behind the front wheels. I presume certain combos of wheels and 35 tires would be easier to fit than other combos. Trying to identify the recommended combos before I pull the trigger.
