@EatSleepTacos do you know it the rear drum auto adjusters work with the regular brakes or just parking brake in reverse ? I have it pretty close but was hoping it tightens up a little more on its own.

Brian got it all on video and I’m so glad he did. After this pic, I continued forward and my rear driver tire was quite literally 3’ in the air.

I’ve never had good luck with it tightening on its own

Went to Potts mountain this weekend with @boogie3478 and @Mobtown Offroad. We planned on meeting at a nearby gas station at 9:15am and then head to the trail from there. I receive a text halfway there that joe accidentally fell back asleep, so he’d be 2 hours late.

Brian and I decided to go set up camp, hangout, make lunch, and me top off my front diff (leaky seal) while waiting for joe to show up. He gets there at 12:30 and we get started on the trail at 1:00

As soon as I put it in 4wd and made a turn, I heard a nasty clicking coming from my drivers side CV. The outer boot had a pinhole and had been leaking grease for awhile but I’d put off fixing it. Upon hearing the clicking, I knew I had to change the CV ASAP so that it didn’t catastrophically fail further into the trail. I find a flat spot a few minutes in and remove the CV. I put in my spare CV and notice the first couple threads are messed up. At this point I don’t really have any options, so I thread the nut on the best I can and hit it with an impact. I was hoping it would correct itself and get seated so I can at least get home. I was wrong.

I couldn’t even get the nut halfway on and the threads got absolutely annihilated. At this point, our only option is to go out in town and find an auto parts store with a CV. The only kicker is there’s no service until we hit the highway, which is 30 minutes away.

We leave my truck on the trail and head back to camp. Brian ran me into town and I started making phone calls. Found an autozone with axle only 10 minutes away. We go and get it, get back to the truck, and I get the CV all buttoned up. Killed 4 hours doing that and we didn’t get started on the trail until 5pm. After that though, a great day of wheeling and night of camping. I got a nice dent, but other than that, no more issues.

Nice!! What is the trail fix way of popping the CV out of the diff? I Used a slide hammer on mine last time in the garage. I never had luck with a prybar.

I have a piece of braided steel cable that I loop around the inner CV joint. Use a 3lb hammer on the other side and give it a couple swings. Works great, I may pick up one of these so I stop poking my hands on the cable.

The result of me trying to run the nut on with an impact. Had about a 50/50 shot of it working.

For a trail fix, you have to improvise sometimes. Once I realized the threads on the spare were messed up, the options were put the broken one back in, go to camp, then run out in town and buy a new one.

Or, try to thread it on anyways. Worst case if it doesn’t work out, run out in town and buy a new one.

Y’all are gonna laugh, but I’m already over these half doors. Even without getting hit with wind, they’re loud on the highway. This means I can’t listen to music or a podcast, and I get super bored. And it’s just exhausting to wear ear protection that long, or be subjected to the noise. The increased visibility is nice, but there’s not THAT much increase. Not enough to justify the boring drive. Closest place to go wheeling is 4 hours away. Ooof.

So, I’m going to build another set of tube doors, without mirrors. That way I can toss them in the bed and they won’t take up much space. When I get where I’m going, I’ll swap doors and leave my normal doors at camp. If I’m in a situation I can’t do that, no tube doors for me. I was miserable on the drive home.
