Depends where you live. I’m out in Chesapeake in some nice suburbs and we’re paying $2125 a month in rent, house is valued around $330k. Taxes, couldn’t really tell you because I don’t pay any va taxes because we’re only here since my wife is active duty military.

Appreciate the extra details. Taxes seem cheap as hell but HOA's seem unavoidable. We are torn between staying towards the beach vs going closer to the mountains. A house worth $450k is still half our taxes up here. Lots of suburbs down there, I hope to get the hell out of the burbs if I can.

Thanks man. Saw lots of options in our price ranges even with an acre of land anywhere between Richmond and Norfolk. Was thinking about going closer to the beach to give my wife more beach access so that when we move to Colorado she had her fill of the beach. The thing I don't know is are there even beaches close to Chesapeake/Richmond? All I see is the bay and don't see many beaches except Virginia Beach. Norfolk seems like it's got quite a few beaches nearby.

My preference IF we moved South (I'd prefer to move straight west) it would be somewhere around Asheville, NC. Can't afford the city itself but can manage the outskirts.

Property tax on a 350K home in the Norfolk area should be somewhere around 4400/yr.

not bad, not great either...our house was $2200 for this year, and it was only valued at 229k, but market value is much higher right now. if we lived in city limits, our taxes would be much higher.

I'd be afraid of a first gen showing up your third gen on the trails too... :boink:

Taxes is a major motivator... $8200 on $280k.

Have you visited Asheville? I went there 20 years ago and loved it. Then we went this March and I wasn't impressed. The city proper is a bunch of starving, homeless artists. A lot of the business' are strange or overly-fancy food establishments. My wife is a foodie and we did a bunch of food-related stuff there. I felt like we had gone to a bunch of overpriced restaurants that had little to show for it. My favorite being a fried chicken joint we went to.

Outside of town there's things to do, but it's limited. Asheville used to be a place I'd move to. Not so much anymore.

Do you guys have to deal with humidity up there in Jersey? Because we sure as fuck do here and lemme tell you, it sucks. As far as beaches go I'm not much help because I hate the beach. On the plus side, I'm not far from the outer banks where you can drive on the beach.

Yup, Asheville is now "Portland East" full of try-hard wierdos. One of my buddies lives in the trendy part of town, and has hilarious stories every time I talk to him.

We thought about moving there a few years ago, but NOPE. Not somewhere I'd want to live. Too many west coasters have moved in and turned everything blue. Only thing it lacks is legal marajuana.

Those are good descriptions of what it's become. It was a little too much for me. Oh well, there's always my 45 acres in the most amazing city in NC, Jacksonville!

Don't plan on an easy brunch access...Asheville is a BRUNCH driven town, not that they don't have good food spots, but it's a bit crazy even during the week (potentially driven by the ecclectic swirl that is Asheville proper or however Dave referenced above).

I can't really comment on the "rush" or anything. We were there in mid-March and shut-downs were starting to happen. We ended up cutting our vacation short because everything was closed.

There were plenty of head-shops and CBD joints. I could care less about legalized-Marijuana, honestly. It's the crowd it can sometimes attract that does bother me.

Never been but it is known as a tech town so I'd be able to find work pretty easily. Honestly it's less care about the town and more about the area. My wife and I are avid hikers, so we would have an endless supply of things to do. Stuff like the great smoky mountains, mt mitchell, etc. Not to mention with mountains come good motorcycle roads. I don't give two shit's about an actual city. I just want to live in the mountains with nice views, and a commute that's within an hour.

Yeah I don't care for the beach either. But my wife loves it, so wanna try to find a decent compromise. And yes, straight humid from Mid May-September.

You'll definitely get some nice motorcycling roads. That was how I got there 20 years ago. It was why I wanted to move there at the time. And some good hiking.

    Can't argue with that bit...

Also the not taking anything away or for this, but you CANNOT deny the Comifornia mindset is alive and well in this city...
