I definitely prefer the look of these tires on a 7.5” wide wheel vs 9” wide. Looks a little too bulbous for my liking. Not the end of the world though, obviously.

Same amount of backspacing, 3.5”. I’ll clear my suspension up front just fine but I’ll definitely rub the firewall and cab mount now.

Does a wider wheel with the same BS as a narrower wheel have less offset? Or do I have that backwards?

I was referring to the firewall / cab mount, I’m sure there was absolutely no issue with suspension clearance on those wheels.

 

edit: a 7.5” wheel with 3.5” BS has a -18mm offset and a 9” wheel with 3.5” BS has a -36mm offset.

 

I don’t pay much attention to offset. What I care about is backspacing and width. BS is a static measurement that’s applicable across all wheels of different shapes and sizes.

I hate when people say “I have a 0 offset wheel.” Well ok, that doesn’t really mean anything. 0 offset is worlds different on a 7” wide wheel vs a 10” wide wheel.

Rear two tires are finally done, coming in right at 4 hours. You can easier see the size difference now between the two tires.

 

I agree with what you are saying about the offset being an incorrect “go-to” number for wheel spec, but they do need to be used together. Correct me if I’m wrong though, because I honestly don’t know a whole lot about wheels and probably am. This is just my lack of knowledge here trying to verbalize a thought.

A 9” wide wheel with 3.5” backspacing and a 7.5” wide wheel with 3.5” backspacing are not the same, and that’s where the offset comes into play. The offset is the independent variable to the backspacing measurement. The 9” wheel has 5.5” of wheel past the mounting surface where the 7.5” wheel has 4” of wheel past the mounting surface. The wheel with less offset (9” wheel in this case) sticks out further from the hub and therefore has a greater scrub radius than the wheel with greater offset (7.5” wheel). And as far as fitting a tire in a wheel well, the scrub radius is one of the main things that matters.

That being said, the same conclusion is drawn from BS and width. I think we are saying the same thing in a different way, but you know more of what you are talking about. Haha.
