If it weren't for the disastrous ECU fiasco, this gen could have been a classic.

    RIP

Zealotry, in any form, for any perceived cause, or greater good, usually ignores common sense, statistical mathematics, an understanding of physics, the natural world, or the universe. Sometimes there is a lemon, sometimes you are the poor bastard who bought it. Happens to us all. Hopefully, it's just a cracked egg in the carton, sour milk, underwear that has some kind of ball shrinking chemical in it, whatever. Get the fuck over this, Christ! Every thread you open, is some form of the same shit.

I don't think the ECU is part of the list of 2nd gen problems:
    Weak leaf springs
    Frame rust (some build locations)
    Low MPG.
    6MT

I still think it's a rock solid truck.

They'll live on in used car lots for the next 15 years, don't worry. I doubt it'll ever be hard to find a stock 2nd gen... I still see decent pre-95 trucks for sale all the time and they're 20+ years old now.

I'm a little sad to hear the 2nd gens will be getting axed into a new generation build. I'm all for progression of tech, but I hold a soft spot in my heart at this point for these trucks.

if the new 3rd gen in an extra cab is decent enough and all of the above issues listed resolved then maybe I would consider it.

However a full size is only a little bigger in overall size, more powerful and in almost every case better MPG.. so its hard to want a mid/full size truck anymore.

gone are the days of the smaller trucks.. that makes me a sad panda.

I am more than happy to stay with my trusty solid 1st gen.:D

Oh stop. If there was an ECU fiasco in the 2nd Gen it would be all over TacomaWorld. Maybe yours had a problem but there isn't a problem with the ECU that in any way defines the 2nd Generation Taco.

You can thank America for that. Since we are so hell bent on gluttony, and the bigger is better attitude towards everything.

Seriously. People need to stop initiating false rumors about the truck. They will makes someone who doesnt know any better believe that it is true.

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
    End of an Era.

I enjoyed my 1Gen a lot, I would be still divining it if not for crappy frame.

This fall I will have my 2gen for 9 years, and I do enjoy driving it but this one also is having frame issues. I am keeping my 2gen because I think Engine and Transmission is bulletproof and I will never get anything better than that 1GR and 750. Plus I love how it looks like. almost 9 years and I like looks of it.

I would buy so called 3gen(more like 2.4 Gen) but with crappy engine, frame the same like 2 gen, and new Tacoma looking like a crossbreed between Subaru and F150 (aka not looking like Toyota at all) I am going to pass.
I dont see a point of paying for Toyota and getting some rip off version of Ford.
So I will mark calendar to have a drink on that day and give my truck detail wash.

No such thing as ECU disaster....maybe a MikeDeason Tacoma ECU disaster but not in general.
