SS3 6000k Max with the 4000k yellow Pro/Sport selective yellow fog optic. This combo is not supplied by Diode Dynamics and not recommended.

The result of a 6000k blue light with too light of a yellow correction filter is green. Which is why the Max requires a unique optic color for selective yellow.

Checking the output color against the selective yellow chromaticity window, it fails hard as way outside the legal chromaticity box. Obviously Diode Dynamics knew this which is why they developed a unique optic to the Max to correct it back to the legal color of yellow and get it within the chromaticity window.

I really haven't looked outside of SAE membership publications. Unfortunately my employer only pays for the inexpensive membership options, meaning all papers and documents are extra for me. Something about the ROI when the vast majority of our CFD business is aerospace and defense.

Won't lie, I get all kinds of salty when federal laws cite things that are ultimately behind paywalls. Horsesh*t of the highest order that you can't even access the regulations you're expected to abide by.

Another question, my PRO’s are yellow, would it be ok to switch to a clear lense or is that a no no?

Here's what @crashnburn80 recommended when I asked about the best Pro combo to match halogen headlight color temp...

    ----------
For white I'd highly recommend ordering the 4000k emitter based selective yellow lights and purchasing a white lens to get 4000k output. The output color is phenomenal and no loss in intensity over the 6000k 'white' version. No other LED fogs on the market are available in this color temp. 4000k will look far more natural with your halogens, whereas 6000k is not going to blend well at all and be more distracting. Only the Sport and Pro are available in 4000k.

6000k vs 4000k vs 3000k (shown in Sport)

So based on wanting white to run with a halogen setup, I'd go with the Pro in 4000k.
    ----------

I, therefore, picked-up a pair of Pro Yellow SAE Fog (#DD6191) and Clear SAE/DOT Fog lenses (#DD6350) on Black Friday. The Clear Fog lenses will replace the original Yellow Fog lenses with which the light assemblies shipped. (Waiting for it to warm-up a bit to install them, so no feedback yet.)

Yes, it produces a very nice 4000k white. Yellow SS3s with clear lenses for 4000k was demonstrated and covered in the SS3 review, so you can see the color output next to the selective yellow and 6000k.

Edit: @Norton has all the details and image in the above post!

Certainly very frustrating. Problem is the SAE standards are copyrighted by SAE so they cannot be openly published to give away for free. I agree that as a requirement the information should be more readily available to the public, though I suppose generally end users are buying the products from the manufacture who is the one that needs to make sure they meet the requirements spec.

Umm, wow! The information and effort that @crashnburn80 has put into this topic is epic! I stumbled on it last night and finally had to put the iPad down just after midnight and nearly 90 pages later. All of this made me think of replacing the fogs with an SAE compliant fog thanks to the information provided. Just not sure which one.

I have a question though... did you compare the KC G4 to the Rigid 360 (SAE) and Baja Designs Fog Pocket? All in in Amber though. We ‘enjoy’ a relatively short Winter, but with lots of snow during that time. I will apologize up front if this has been already posted. I like the KC design, but not having the thermal energy on the lens to minimize snow/ice build up could be an issue. Additionally, cutting down some dust in the Summer would be nice as well. I am limited to the amount of additional light that can be added here in Canada. The fogs will be the only supplemental light that I can use on-road. However, I do plan on installing off road lights for play time out on the Forestry Service Roads.

I suppose the other consideration is amber vs selective yellow too though. It gets tough to figure out which is the ‘right’ light!

Welcome! Note that all the updates for new products are posted at the very top of the original post, so there is no need to have to read through all the pages to catch up. :)

Here are links to the product reviews you inquired about:
    Rigid 360 Series
    Baja Designs
    KC Amber

Note that Rigid and Baja are both selective yellow, where as KC is actually amber. It is confusing that Baja incorrectly calls their lights amber when they are actually yellow. For a fog light you want selective yellow for higher output and better visibility, not amber. So I’d rule out the amber G4’s. Bajas are the lowest output intensity product in selective yellow in this thread with the worst cut offs, so I’d rule them out as well. The 360s do look really sharp and I think have one of the best looking product designs, but the double lens is going to significantly reduce the heat that makes it to the outer lens to prevent icing. The latest products from Diode Dynamics offer the highest intensity output and largest beam pattern area. The Max is new with the yellow optic due out later this month. For best de-icing performance I’d recommend the Max or Pro, though I have not yet tested the Max yellow optic but hope to soon.

I think part of (what I observe as) the recurring confusion from new readers (coming from someone who came to this party late myself) is that reading through the thread from the front gives a very different perspective than reading it in reverse (ala memento) would.

Perhaps some minor changes to the first post might improve the new reader experience?

    1. Current leaderboard at the top of the post with date of last update
    2. Cliff notes section moved to the top just below the leaderboard and updated (I think this might be the primary source of confusion for someone doing a quick skim?)
    3. Use of spoilers to allow expand/collapse of each individual product review so the initial vertical use of space is not as overwhelming and so that more general guidelines are more prominent

Since I'm rather poor at presenting thoughts clearly and concisely, I defer to others about how best to refine. But I thought it was worth mentioning that my initial impression (and it seems several other new readers as well) was quite a bit different from where I think it ought to have been if I had fully understood the bulk of the information the first time.

Now it’s time to find a Canadian dealer and hopefully a promo code for Rigid. I’m looking forward to ordering the Rigid lights this afternoon and hopefully beat the snow season. I’m also new to the off-roading world and so far I’m finding it really great. My motorsports time has always been on paved closed course circuits, so this is a much different world for sure!

I can ship stuff to Canada land, and get you a good deal along the way on Rigid if that's the path you want to roll!
