Because I don't have too many hobbies already.

Found myself with more time on my hands than usual, and really needed to occupy myself.

Always thought lock picking was cool, and I had watched videos years back but only recently decided to get into it.

Anyone else do this for fun?

I've got the most basic kit, and although I haven't used my rakes, I do find single pin picking to be a little therapeutic.

    20230527_182513.jpg

Thought I'd start doing short videos of locks I've picked. Unfortunately I don't have the first 2-3 different locks I've picked as I borrowed those but I started buying some to practice on.

    Master Lock 141 -

    https://youtu.be/Cve8lsSK15g

Supposed to be the easier sort of lock to pick. Had ordered this thinking it'd be a little tougher but one pick and I got it right away.

    Brinks 40MM -

    https://youtu.be/sKvgwh0nR38

This one is supposed to be a few tiers up in difficulty, mainly because it uses 3 spool pins and 1 regular pin. I actually found this one to be a bit more 'technical' but just as easy. Really like the engagement with little tension on the wrench.

I've got a whole lot of locks arriving soon (Ebay used) as well as a new Master Lock 140. Looking forward to the 140 because it also runs 3 spool pins but they're shallow.

Share your tools and experience or just shoot the shit and hang out :burp:

Thread sucks. You should go finish that bumper instead of picking locks :fistbump:

I got into it for a little bit. I have more success single pin picking too. The right amount of tension can be tricky to get on some locks. Mushroom and spool pins are still difficult for me. I haven’t messed with it in awhile.

I'm a subscriber and serial watcher of TheLockPickingLawyer on YouTube. I dabbled in lockpicking when I was laid up for 9 weeks with a broken ankle. It's a pretty neat skill to have. It's already helped friends. Lol. In case anyone needs to know, RV locks are incredibly easy to pick, seriously. Once you start watching that dudes channel you realize just how unsecure the world really is. It's nuts!

I've noticed some locks are more sensitive to tension than others; I guess this is where locks with tighter tolerances come into play.

Never knew he was on Youtube but I have seen a few of his short reels on Facebook.

I actually got his set (shown above) although there are tons of other companies that offer quality picks as well.

Recently ordered the shims and decoder he offers, just because.

If you like LPL, are you familiar with Mcnallyofficial? He's more "the young crowd" kinda video although he can still be as informative as LPL.. although he is way funnier in my opinion. His hard-on for posting content just to trash talk Masterlock makes me laugh every single time

Here's a good example of his chicanery

Only thing I don't like about my kit is how few picks it has.

Part of me wants to order individual picks, and part of me wants to order a larger (higher end) pick set because I'm realizing I'll only be able to practice on select locks with what I currently have.

For instance, the #3 Master Lock I have requires a much smaller pick because currently it's way easy to overset the pins using what I have.

I've got sparrow lock pick sets...I've always said there's no worse security than perceived security. I've bought numerous locks from hardware stores for fun, picking them in under 2 minutes. I've also carved keys from blanks to locks I have no keys for...funniest one was a made in China lock that I can open with blank

Been waiting for a thread like this

Or you pull the pro gamer move and 'git gud' so it doesn't matter what you have :luvya:

Jk, I know exactly what you mean about getting individual ones and compiling your own, more precise kit. I wanna do it that way as well, I planned on starting with what McNally recommended

Found the video, he had me sold when I first watched it https://youtu.be/HVxleDcN1Ec

I may just order a few individual picks tonight.

Add a few to try TOK tension wrenches versus bottom to see how I like it too.

I know you've ordered a bunch of different locks to practice but have you looked into practice locks? Not the see through ones, (we've already talked about not learning that crutch) but the ones where you can set the pins up in countless configurations?

I was thinking of ordering this guy

Nice. I just looked up Sparrow Picks.
They have really good prices. This thread has a lot of potential. Lots of good stuff already.

Yep, I've eyeballed that thing for awhile now!

Just haven't ordered it cause I've had fun just picking random locks. I'll definitely add it to the "list" once I've added a few more tools to the arsenal.
