Do any of you guys out there sew? Looking at all the canopies, tents, awnings, bags, etc., on all the camping gear setups, I wonder how many on here roll their own? That name brand stuff is expensive as all hell just for a few yards of material, and then it might or might not fit just right when it comes out of the box.

Before anyone says only women sew, over the years I have made my own sails, Sunbrella covers, awnings, duffles, and even shorts a time or two. The very best sailmakers I have met have all been men.

Just wondering if anybody else owns a sewing machine and uses it for projects?

I tried with a sewing machine many years back, but I couldn't sew a straight line or without things bunching up. I want to try again and I'm thinking about one of those $35 Ikea sewing machines.

Ive been to a sail makers shop and the sewer was on a hole. Seen the setup of an upholstery and they some fancy machines. But when i asked an sewing machine repair man, he said any old machine will be up to the task, as the metals are cast not machined. (one piece)

Nice! Never tried the embroidery machines. I’m skeered of all those needles! With my huge hands I enough trouble keeping them out of just the one.

Mine is an old Sailrite LSZ-1. I bought it to carry on my sailboat for projects and repairs because I can hand crank it. Isaw brags about it being able to sew through a “Cruising World” magazine somewhere. In those days they were almost 3/4” thick and hundreds of pages. Took a copy down there, it did it. Bought it on the spot. Mine has been knocked into the bilge for a few days at sea, then when I sold my boat it was under 6’ of flood water twice in my barn. Still kickin though.

Since I replaced my old truck with a new TRDOR I have been gathering stuff for making all new camping gear, tent, awning, etc. since none of my old stuff fits. It was a Super Duty F250 FX4 so kinda bigger.

You have NOTHING to apologize for. Sewing is a very noble yet dying profession.

Sailrite makes a nice machine. I’ve sewn a bunch of stuff just to see if I could do it. I’ve gotten pretty good at some things and others I’m still working on. It’s a fun hobby and you learn a lot doing it. Not to mention you save a good bit hemming pants or other things.

Noble maybe, but even more than that frugal! Saved lots of money over the years and always had exactly what I wanted made the way I wanted it.

Now if I could only make a decent weld... never could quite get that one down. Wish I could do half as well as some on here.

My welds usually end up looking good at the end of the project. Then I won't weld for a few months and it's the same thing over again. Haha
