I've encountered plenty of people who seem to think their device is in two-way communication with GPS satellites, a misunderstanding the term "network" can reinforce.

You weren't being admonished or corrected or anything, I was adding on. Sorry you seem to have a problem with that.

Understood. I see where you are coming from now.

Side topic: Iridium flares are one of my favorite things to watch.

Almost as good as watching C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. :D

Sadly I have so much light pollution near home and a topography where trees block nearly all low elevation sky that I've done very little sky watching from home the past couple decades.

I have no problem with my in dashboard map. The map has a problem with me the way I drive. It keeps saying:
    - in 200 ft stop and let me out. I had enough.

My only beef with Waze is that about 6 months ago I guess they updated and it gives turn directions suuuuper late. I'll be going 45mph then literally 50 feet before the intersection it says "turn left".

    It wasnt always that bad.

Nothing to do with my 3rd gen's nav, which is pretty lame but better than nothing, but I used Google maps plus a couple of GPS apps I have on my iPhone, as a passenger on a commercial flight yesterday, in airplane mode. It took a while to get the location without cellular assist (I had a window seat) but tracked the route quite well, and it was fun to identify on the map what I could see out the window. Plus I could one of my apps showed our elevation and speed ... I even took a screen shot of it showing 41000 feet and 519 mph. Higher and faster than my Taco will ever go.

Google owns Waze. That's a "feature" they merged.

If anyone from Toyota is reading this, add a "mute" button to the next SW release. One shouldn't have to go deep into a menu structure to silence the voice. And I gotta agree with @smitty99 on the maps; they're quite good for National Forests in California, but the need to zoom in plus lack of screen contrast for minor roads makes it difficult to actually use for navigation or location finding.
