The Navy b-day is 13 Oct 1775 and the USMC b-day is 10 Nov 1775. They were separate branches, the Marines being the sharp shooters on the Navy ships. Congress put the USMC under the Navy in 1834. While technically we are a part of the Navy, the 2 worlds couldn't be much farther apart from each other. The Navy puts us on their ships for deployments, we go ashore and do our jobs. The Navy provides us medical care, we provide them with plenty of fresh wounds for them to practice medicine on. We use their jargon to describe doors and windows and such.. We are not them and they are not us, we are not Sailors. We are no ones step children.

Yea my kids say the same thing. Then I ask them where their money comes from. And as to being step children, jarheads are always complaining about being given only leftovers.

Used to be real interesting during the holidays around here. One cousin was a sailor, one a marine and I was an airedale. Then the kids came along and we had everything but coasties.

I was never in a bar with different branches without some ragging on one another. Right up until some civilian mouthed off.

I hear ya, and I've experienced some of those same things, my brother and SIL were Corpsmen. She actually finished her nursing degree under a Navy program and became an O1 upon graduation. She retired a few years ago in her mid 40's as an O3 with 24 years of service. She wins ! As far as 'where do the paychecks come from', they ALL come from Uncle Sam. There's never a shortage of inner-service rivalry, it came be healthy to a certain degree. What always seems to be a common thought is that no one else wants to do the Marine Corps job. We have the smallest branch and the smallest budget and we make do with plenty of hand-me-downs, and ironically become just as effective with those weapons as the branch that got the latest-and-greatest version of the system. That's a huge source of our pride plus we get very specialized equipment for our expertise that no one else could operate.

Once, when I was in Iraq, a platoon of Marines rounded a corner of our FOB. An Airman was standing on top of a hill, taunting the Marines. The Platoon Sergeant ordered his 1st squad to take the hill. When the dust settled, 1st squad rolled down the hill all bloody, black and blue. The Platoon Sergeant repeats his orders to 2nd squad and the same thing happens.

The Platoon Sergeant then yells for 3rd and 4th squad to take that hill and whoop that Airman's ass. The dust settles again and the lone Marine from 4th squad crawls down the hill and says "Sarge, Sarge, don't go up that hill, it's an ambush" ! The Platoon Sergeant looks at him confused, and says, "what do you mean ambush" ? The young Marine says "there's two of em" !

It’s time to be truthful about the USMC. Most of their history is based on propaganda and lies. I encourage you to read the article below for more information.

    https://thepopulist.wordpress.com/never-faithful-the-rivalry-between-our-army-and-marines/

Furthermore, every Marine I know just celebrated their service’s 146 year of service however the USMC is only 131 years old. For fifteen years the USMC didn’t exist from 1783 to 1798. The article below lays out more lies Marines tell themselves.

    https://www.wearethemighty.com/lists/marine-corps-myths/

The USMC is a giant propaganda machine and this thread reflects accordingly. Happy late Veteran’s Day jarheads!

The Marine Corps would be pleased with your comments. Win the propaganda war, win the recruiting war. Just, shhh, keep your facts to yourself thanks very much.

As for facts, it’s still established that we Marines have the other services beat in four key areas, for what it’s worth:
    1) Most difficult standard fitness test
    2) Most difficult basic and officer initial training
    3) Best uniforms
    4) Lowest ASVAB scores :)

    Cheers!

    Yea, I like crayons too.

Doesn't really matter once you start operating operationally as a "civilian". You team up with guys from every branch then. Some bad, some good. I personally have no loyalty towards any military for our government. I got in to learn a skillset and I got out to use it. Every service member understands this and once you understand it, you understand who the real enemy is. Foreign and DOMESTIC.

We all know the Marine are just a branch of the Navy, so of course being part of the best branch they can claim to be the best...
We all know Army just stands for An't Ready to be a Marine Yet and the Air Force were the rejects the Army did not want to house in the Army Air Corps any longer. As for Space Force, well the name says it all.

Army guys forget that the Navy has a Ranger equivalent, we call them Marines.

Interesting articles, however any article that can give credit to Macarthur discredits itself. It also ignores the fact that Mac could have ended the two command problem he complained of by handing the Army over to the Navy. A brief study of the man clearly revels the accuracy of Eisenhower's opinion of him.

The first article also mischaracterizes the reason for the second flag raising, which was because brass wanted the first flag that was razed and ordered it taken down. It was not an intentional staging for the press.

The characterization of Chosin is also very questionable. If Macarthur had been obeyed to the letter no one would have made it out of the valley. Yes, the Corps has lots of myth woven into how it tells history, but to counter myth with slander undermines the point being made and makes it clear that the authors real enemy (to use his term) is the Corps.

On hilarious Marine crap though, the stated purpose of the fullers on a Ka-Bar (and the persistence of that myth is proof that few Marines have used one in a lethal manner).

Hey, it's not gay if you're underway. Truth is though, that test is for female sailors and male Marines.

You do know why the Navy has Marines, right?

Because goats would be too obvious.

Now I'm going to find a very deep hole to hide in and be glad Marines are killers, not hunters...
