Mods: Is this still a Tacoma?

This...not everyone’s a forum member, the issues here do not represent the vast amounts sold. TSBs are what would tell you the truth about confirmed and manufacturer recognized issues and most of them seem to have been addressed by 2018. Keep in mind OP that people on a forum are passionate about thier vehicles and may be more picky and anal about things that are just normal or unnoticed or non bothersome to the rest of the world NOT on the forums.

Just put 1000 miles on my 18 4DSB Auto. No issues besides the shitty shifting of the auto. Going to order the Shift sense pro V2.

Bought my 18 in January and love it except for the rear end howl/whining noise, got about 2200 mi. on it now so when I take it in at 5k for tire rotation and oil change i'll have them address the noise issue but from what it sounds like on here thats going to be like pissin in the wind.

Test drive it and be objective about it. Some people don't like the power band or the transmission, or they don't even know what they like but they aren't happy. Heck, we had a guy in this thread complain that his truck drives like poo compared to his old truck..... I don't know why he bought it then, unless he didn't test drive and think objectively about it.

I love my truck (2016) and I have 45K on the clock. It ain't the fastest, it ain't the quietest, it ain't the bestest couch ride, but it's a pretty good little truck and does what I ask it.

I did the same thing you’re doing. I’ve owned three other Toyota PU before I purchased my current 3rd gen. No regrets.
    Best wishes on your purchase.

It’s not really that’s ther is any “trouble” with the transmission or differential. It’s the fact that the truck doesn’t drive exactly like we’d expect it to. It’s doing this for MPGs Toyota says.

You can always use the “ECT PWR” button. Or, take it a step further and get a ECU/TCU tune to unlock hidden power and drive with better shift points.

Thanks :). I recently totaled my 3rd gen, but I walked away with no issues, so buying a new one was kind of a no brainier :p

I have a 2018 DCOR SB. I have about 1200 on mine. The truck was a bit of a surprise to me. I was worried about all the transmission woes that people were having, but I didn’t have any issues with that. I am however going in for my first “issue” of having a pronounced click when I depress my brake pedal. I am all but certain what the issue might be. I also have a slight howling issue in the rear diff at just above 50mph. The speed window is small and the throttle has to be just right. I will probably leave that be unless it gets worse. I am looking to upgrade my suspension eventually. All and all, if I were to make the purchase again, I would probably look at a 4Runner more seriously if I don’t need the bed; however, it is more expensive. I think all the growing pains are gonna be resolved soon.

Ps. My experience with vehicles being my personal 93’ Camry prior to my Tacoma. I also drive Dodge Ram 2500, Ford Expedition, Chevy Suburban, and Dodge Charger daily at work.

I just rolled over 36k on my '17 TRD OR DCLB. i love it! i did the tranny tsb, checked tranny fluid levels before i drove it off the lot. Torqued the U bolts. I did all the checks i learned about on this forum. I also changed the oil at 5k contrary to factory recommendation. I haven't babied my truck by any means, but i have taken care of it and performed all of the regular maintenance on it as well.
It's been a great truck and i hope to get many years out of it! I would recommend you drive a few, make yourself familiar with it, then decide if you want to join the TACO club!

    Best of luck

I have a 2017 TRD Auto- I am seriously considering trading it off after 8 months and 12,000 miles. It had loose ubolts, low rear end fluid from the factory and rear end howl, I fixed those myself and undercoated it and it took out the howl at about 50. What I am having a hard time with is the transmission shifting and it has a hesitation between 20-50mph that will cease if I put 93 octane Vpower gas in it. I think it is a valve timing issue that has to do with the Atkinson cycle but who know the dealership says it's normal. What real erks me is if I tow something small like a 12ft trailer and 4wheeler I get 10mpg and it sounds like the engine is coming out of it on hills. I owned a 2011 Tacoma for 6yrs loved it and wish I had it back. I would not buy another one and I am going tomorrow to price a F150 with a 5.0. I would go with a Tundra but cannot handle the bad gas mileage they have.
