I took this shot two weeks ago at a state park. I didn't do the rock stack - somebody else had built it and I noticed it when I was walking by, and decided it would be a cool scene for a long-exposure shot.
I think there is a yin-yang quality to the rigid appearance of the rock stack surrounded by the flowing water. :taco:

Just an enthusiast here... long live the digital camera! The more I snap, the more likely I get that lucky shot. IMG_0032.jpg

Some random pictures I've taken on the last trip. I tried shooting with a Sony and just couldn't get the hang of it - Didn't feel right in my hands and the menu system confused the hell out of me.

That being said, I'll stick to my 6D for now. I did, however, love how light the Sony was as well as the video. Maybe one day I'll buy one and learn how to use it!

My first attempts with my D3500 I recently got. I didn't use a tripod like I probably should have on some of them. Any tips or advice?

Looking good! That D3500 gets you a lot for your money.

Shoot vertically to include more of the trees shadows on the ground and show the top of the trees. Alternatively show more stream as your focus point with trees in background.

Put your camera damn near in the flowers and try to compose for the mountains then. Esentially fill the foreground more with flowers. Or focus stack to have everything in focus :notsure:

Keep shooting and enjoying the hobby. There's no rules, just some things I would try to experiment with

The truck is in the shadow. If it's the main subject, you could either light it or park it in the sun for a more balanced shot. Also, tighter and setting the exposure for the truck would also work.
Usually, trees want height. Either a wider angle lens or stop the lens all the way down and try to make a sun star since the shot is mostly into the sun. To make a sunstar, set the aperture between f/16 and f/22 and shutter speed accordingly. You want the sun to just barely peak past the object for the star to appear-you might not see it in the view finder-try making several exposures exposing a tiny bit more of the sun to see which makes the best sunstar. Might also work to back up a little bit to incorporate more of the scene.
This doesn't really work as there's nothing to draw your eye into any subject. It might work better with a sharp foreground and nice green background bokeh. The mustard plants always look good with a rich green background.
It's a cute portrait. Be careful with autofocus as it will sometimes catch blades of grass and throw the focus off. This is always hardest for me when shooting birds in the cover grass. You got the focus in a difficult condition.

Overall, I think you did a pretty good job for early shots from a new camera.

    Thanks for the tips @Breezy @henrilepuf @ian408

All those were on a semi-auto setting. Going to try more manual settings and try to fine tune the techniques

See how different the flowers and background look?
