The black and white one would be better if you warmed the temperature when you convert it, that would kill most the dark shadows.

Here is a picture my buddy took, he had no idea how to use my camera, I think he did pretty well on this one. I told him to go pick him up and get a hobby with me!

Orange tint to an image is usually from a White Balance (WB) setting - your camera can use presets or you can set it using a custom WB pic. I won't go down that path with you because it's challenging to explain.

Check this link (and scroll down to White Balance Settings (10.00): http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com/content/Nikon-D3000-Digital-Camera-Review-20977/White-Balance.htm

For those lights that you had in the picture I'd choose something around the 2700k to 3000k settings and play around. If the picture gets too blue, your WB setting is too cool and you'll have to dial the WB back down.

Play around with your camera and see what comes out right for you. If you don't have a flash pick up a tripod for night exposures. Fun times can be with just a tripod:

The lamps are probably more orange to begin with. And while the WB might be off, it's not the reason the truck is orange.

If you want a quick and dirty way to make a white balance picture to use for setting WB, take a coffee filter (the white ones) and place it over the lens (make sure to set manual focus), aim the camera at your subject and snap a shot. Now, go to the custom white balance menu and select one of those shots for your WB.

It's not perfect but it works and is less expensive than an Expodisk. Plus you can usually snag a few filters from the office coffee stash :D
