ya i know exactly what you mean, i just feel like i need something more than just iPhoto i mean its a decent program but it doesn't provide a lot of room for advancement.

and I'm trying to find the program that is "right" for me at the moment because photography and just art in general is a strong hobby of mine and id love to one day get some art work in a gallery whether it be a photo or a painting (don't know if it'll ever happen but its a goal) and id just like to have more room for advancement and well education if thats something i can provide myself ill do my best to find what feels right even if i go through dozens of programs haha

In my mind, iPhoto might be OK for snaps but to edit, you really need something else that will allow you to edit.

Don't forget that a lot of stuff has a trial period so you don't have to buy to try.

I am still working on the ISO/aperture/shutter speed on my [M] mode..along with the [TV] and [AV] mode...still confused with the [AV] mode no matter how much reading I do.

Any tips for different weather i.e. sunny/cloundy/rainy? Or better yet a link? I've done a lot of google search during work break but still don't really get the aperture and which setting to use..I just keep it at 5.6

Do you guys leave the white balance on AWB or do you guys select the setting that best suits the surroundings of where the object is?

    Keep the great pictures coming!

^I shoot in AV 99.9% of the time. I stands for Aperture Value and allows you to set the aperture and the camera sets the shutter speed for you. I tend to keep the ISO as low as possible while still keeping the shutter speed fast enough to not cause blur.

Also, most lenses are sharpest at around f/8 so I shoot at f/8 90% of the time unless I need more light.

try a google search on aperture, you should get more information than you'll ever need.

I've read my manual as far as the AV setting goes and I've took pictures with different settings and the outcome of the picture looks the same :notsure:

Yeah I've done numerous search on google as far as the aperture goes. Only thing it really explains is that the higher the aperture the bigger the hole is for the light? Something like that..I just can't figure out how to match it up with the ISO and shutter speed. When I hold down the shutter half way and look through the camera to take a picture I look at the little meter and switch my shutter speed so the little needle is somewhat in the middle. Not sure if anyone knows what I am talking about :confused: (my first DSLR camera)

I use AV most of the time as well. It made a huge difference when I switched from the auto settings. I still don't quite understand the f settings. I always thought the higher the f settings the lower quality photo? or is that completely unrelated?

That's pretty much it in a nutshell.

To get a better understanding of DOF and it's relationship to Aperture, it's worth shooting through the various apertures available to you.

Set up the camera on a tripod and depending on the lens you use, pick a subject that is either near to you (50mm) or farther away (70-200mm). I'd manually focus on your subject then go from the lowest f-stop to the highest. Review the result to see how aperture affects depth of field.

If you can find a DOF calculator, you can also determine depth of field for a given focal length. For example, using a 300mm lens at f/2.8 and your subject is 150' away, you can expect everything from 6 feet in front and 6 feet behind your subject to be in focus. Swap that 300 for a 50 and everything from 50 or so feet in front of you will be in focus. Change the distance to say 15' and the DOF for the 300 changes dramatically--it's less than a a foot in front and back of the subject. For the 50, it's like 2' in front and back.

The DOF calculator also points out how important it is to be spot on with your focus when shooting in low light or wide open (for example; if you're shooting MX and your focus is the rider's chest area, there's a really good chance his head will be out of focus if you're wide open--going back to our 300mm/150 foot example, you might want to shoot at least 4.5 to get the rider/bike in focus).
