Just got back from Best Buy doing a little hands on research. I do like the Canon T3i and the Nikon 5100. both can be had with slight stretching of the budget. They also had a Nikon D5000 on clearance. Older model, but pretty good deal.

I think that we want something longer for the second lens. Like 200mm or 300mm. We take quite a few pictures at lacrosse games and the drag races.

70-300 is a cool lens. Not good for dark places.

Let me ask you guys this. Is it worth getting her a newer model like the canon T3i (18MP), ot will she be fine with the older (and on clearance) Nikon D5000 (12MP)? I want her to be able to learn and use the unit for a number of years while she explores photography.

If you think she will stick with it, i would probably go with the newer t3i or even maybe like a d90 body and get like the 55-200... the d90 leaves a lot more options as far as lenses go since it allows you to use older AF lenses where the d5000 would only let you use AF-S lenses(atleast to use auto focus). the good thing about being able to use AF lenses is that you can find them used for cheap and still in good shape.

if your not sure about how far she is going to take it then i would stick with the d5000 or something similar since it will be fine just for messing around with

megapixels don't make the photo, the image quality comes from the lens

I vote for the D5000, also another good lens to look into is the Nikon 50mm 1.8G (its fairly cheap)

actually this brings up a point.

This is my opinion of course but I believe canon is the way to go in the low end market due to the fact that all canon bodies will have auto focus with all canon auto focus lenses (pretty much all of the modern ones) where as the low end Nikon bodies will not have AF with many nikon lenses (the ones that dont have AF built in).

Also there is no need to get the T3i, the T2i is a great camera too and can be had cheaper. I have a T1i and its been great.
