Yah it is. They have a bunch of different dogs that "work" there too :D

Jedi is one of three labs that hang out. I took Riley with me to visit friends and have lunch. Let's just say it was crazy playing ball in the office with three labs

You need a bigger softbox. Maybe an Octabox or something right over the ear about a foot away.

Sweet. I've liked them on Facebook. They seem pretty cool. :)

Oh yeah there would definately have to be more setup and everything for something good. This was just 2 lights one with an umbrella the other shooting straight on him. We were just goofing off at this point (well pretty much the whole time:p). But it was a lot of fun!

Lighting is always fun and you really don't need more than two lights :D One just above the head (with a diffuser--like the softbox or a 20" beauty dish) and something to light the bottom front of deadmau5...this should be a softbox too. If all you have is umbrellas, try to use shoot through to soften the light.

For those who don't know, you can start with 1/125s, f/11 and ISO 200. Set the over-head strobe to maybe 1/4 power and the front strobe to 1/8 power and fire away. Of course the power settings are gonna depend on the light output of the strobes and also what you're looking to achieve from a lighting perspective (dramatic light, soft, etc).

Good info. I really wish I had more time to play with all the gear and setup and what not but a guy from class was leaving and taking the lights back home with him for a project. :(

On these photos I was trying to achieve the "wrap" effect so to speak. We just set the lights up, I got the shots I needed and tore it all back down. But the whole setup and shooting was fun.

Is there such thing as getting a cheap starter set of lights? Or are they all ridiculously pricey?

You can buy a starter set of lights and diffusers for maybe a grand or so.

Or you can use low budget lights from Home Depot and light stands with sheets from Walmart for soft box like effects.

Phew...thats what I thought. I've been scowering POTN looking for some. The Home Depot isn't a bad idea. I bet you could get some get stuff there to have a decent setup.

Post some up if you have permission!

Here's another one from today. A little more editing into this one than the last one. Not much though. That's me in the photo shot by a buddy on my camera.

Those will do the job. The things I worry about are overheating which can cause failure and is sometimes caused by firing the flash at full power and often--this is usually only possible with an external battery. Recycle time is also a concern. If you're shooting a series of shots, like at a wedding or something, then you want the flash to be ready to go as quickly as possible. And lastly, sometimes the lower end flashes have high infant mortality which means you might open one and it doesn't work or it shits the bed after very little use. So long as you're aware, it's all good.

BTW, if you want to use the Home Depot work lamps, vary the wattage on the bulbs to achieve different lighting levels. Penny tech and it works
