its only the pixel density and the size of the pixel that changes

the sensor in the upcoming 1Dx has some of the biggest pixels in a full frame camera (which allows it to have great ISO capabilities)

The other thing you have to take into account is the logic required for each pixel (and is embedded in it) and the pixel spacing. There's a happy medium with respect to pixel size--I'm not 100% sure what it is though I do know that bigger isn't always better.

Personally, I'm not sure how much all of this should matter to most photographers. I've said before that it's more important to know your camera and be able to use it as the tool it is. Which is why it cracks me up to see 1d users asking "what are your settings" or someone shooting action sports machine gun style "to get the shot".

I have been watching this thread for a while and you guys post some great photos and information & tips ... with some good talent here.

FWIW, I used to shoot (used a Nikon 35mm F-3 HP & still have it somewhere with a 1.4 lens) and now I want to get back into photography.

I need to take classes from beginner and then go up after I do the basics again. Forgot a lot of what I knew. Perhaps you all can suggest a book, CDs or an internet class ?? Local college has night classes at times, but they book up super fast.

Also, any and all suggestions on equipment & etc. is welcomed ...

    Thanks ...

Personally, I don't think you need to take classes to get back into it. IMHO just shooting and using the Aperture priority and Shutter priority and full manual will help you out with going to digital cameras.

You will probably pick it up pretty quickly once you start out again.

I'd recommend the Nikon D3100/D5100 or maybe even the D90 to start back out on.

I agree as well. I put my camera on continuous high with sports. I don't point and let it click like crazy and hope I get the shot. I try to get the "shot" in one shot. But I keep it on high just in case they player does something crazy after I get the "shot" it's happened a couple times, where I'll get the shot I wanted but then the frame afterwards looks pretty good as well. But by all means I don't just put it on high and hope for the best.

Actually, I think it helps to take a class to pick stuff up. But what that class is doesn't mean it can't be a meetup group or even a photography club--awesome way to meet other like minded people.

You might burp off a few before during and after but not hold the shutter down till you run out of buffer. There definitely needs to be a goal of knowing your sport or you're gonna end up having to sort through a couple thousand shots to find "the one" :D

Yeah exactly. When I *click* I burp off 2 maybe 3 tops. I hate cycling through a bunch of pictures to find the "one" to send to the paper.

lol my camera at best has 3 fps I can really only shoot sports one shot at a time. I always try my best to never use burst. It definitely helps me be a better photographer tho.

EDIT: at the basketball game I did not to long ago, I only shot ~200 photo during the first half and about 150 during the second half

I know the feeling. My Rebel only had 3 if I recall right. The 50D I just upgraded to has 6.3 it helps a whole lot but still you don't get better just holding the shutter open the whole time.

See? You are both examples of learning to work with your gear. Imagine if you started off with a 1d series and burped off 20 frames?

If I started off with that I would probably still be in auto mode derping all the time thinking I was a pro!

I know I ain't no pro. I enjoy doing what I do and it's decent money on the side. :)
