Wonder what they will be. Maybe a long awaited D400?

I'm guessing just the d4 and d800 for now. I feel like the d400 will be later

Or d4 and d400 and the d700 will be later

I am glad I took the time to open this thread and read a little in here. There are some very talented people on this forum. I have begun to study and practice photography over the past year. I own the somewhat controversial D7000. If you have ever been on dpreview you would understand why I say that. However there is a picture I really want to make. I want to make a photo of me hugging my daughter against my chest with my arms wrapped around her and nothing else in the photo. I want my face and most everything but my shoulders and arms and my daughter to be dark in the shadows. I hope this didn't confuse you. I was thinking of using a dark room with a flash above us and shooting it to see what result I get. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

thanks man, if it were me id use the 55-250 so you can get a few tight shots if you want might be hard to do that with a 18-55. sometimes with night photos i have issues taking pictures of things in the distance with the 18-55 because it can't focus haha.

anyway good luck man hope you get some good shots!!

Gonna have to experiemnt a little bit... Try:

    iso 400
    f3.5
and however long shutter speed you want. Id do 10-15sec to get a few fireworks in a shot. Hard part is focusing in the dark

    Just the basics
I see a lot of people here asking what camera is being used for particular shots. Although I have been using Canon products since 1981 I don't see any particular brand being better than another. I am of firm belief that the camera is only a tool of the photographer. It takes time and understanding to develop a photographic eye. This is less true with digital than with film but still applies.

Bah! Auto is for point and shoot cameras! It's not film - it's digital! Don't be scared. It won't cost you more to shoot plenty. And do that - shoot lots of various shutter and aperture; it's the only way to learn to make it do what you want. Find a good scene and reshoot it; try everything from aperture mode f/1.8 to f/22, fast shutter to slow shutter. Go back and review and don't expect it to be obvious the next time out. You'll always be learning.

And I'll tell you why to avoid Auto. Some seem to think it's all about their camera and that Auto will just get it right for them. Not so. It's the person holding the camera that makes a photo. Auto just tries to figure it out but sometimes it gets the focus wrong, it limits the exposure, etc. Learn what aperture and shutter is all about. For example, I was at an evening ballroom event. Light was low. There were DSLRs everywhere with long zooms and pop up flash, all shooting blurry photos. I brought a fast prime lens and a speedlight. I set my camera to manual mode, wide open to get as much light as possible with a fast shutter speed to reduce blur. A couple of test shots to tweak the exposure and I was good. Blew away everyone else's shots. Yes, the speed light helped me. So did the fast glass. Manual mode meant I used them both to their full advantage. Auto would not have done as well.

    Just my 2c worth.

I don't think people ask because they're gonna run down and buy what ever it is was mentioned. I do believe people ask because they're trying to learn. Whether it's what lens makes what kind of picture or to get an idea of settings.

Regarding Auto mode, I know professionals who routinely use "auto" with some cameras. Why? Because it works for them. Use the setting that works best for you. That's not to say you shouldn't learn how other modes work, you should. But don't discount auto :D
