Panning is a combination of stuff. Finding a shutter speed that allows you go show motion and still have a sharp subject when you pan.

The money is to keep following your subject after you press the shutter. The biggest mistake by far is to press the shutter then stop panning. The next thing is to try different shutter speeds. Too fast and it freezes the action. Too slow and you run the risk of blurry shots.

The way to learn is to shoot stuff starting at 1/250 and work your way down to say 1/60 and see how it works. Pick an aperture like f11 to start with and adjust ISO to get to that range.

    Here's one of mine:

A bunch of us went riding yesterday. What a day in the dirt. Got a couple good trails done then the Kawi spit me off. It was spectacular! Of course, I'm paying for that today with a tweaked knee and a crazed labrador :D

    ^thanks for the tips!

I was shooting in TV mode for the panning shots at I think around 1/125 for most of them. I had about 15 terrible blurry ones and about 5 somewhat sharp ones like the one I posted. I just need to work on being smoother with the panning motion I think.

Oh and sounds like a good day riding! that CR's suspension was way too stiff for me so it about bucked me off in the whoops a few times, good times lol.

Jake, it's one opinion and it's the internet. Keep those two things in mind and you'll be fine. And keep shooting.

They're just trying to get rid of you because you don't have a $100k race truck. Its just the way they are.

Post one of each (blurry/sharp). If you could post a bit about lens, shutter and aperture info with each, it would help.

    I deleted the horrible ones:eek:

here are the ones I kept though. The exif should be in tact but I was using a Canon rebel T1i with the ef-s 55-250 is lens at 55mm for the most part.

Good panning technique includes steadying the camera as best you can. Usually, holding the camera with your right hand on the grip, your left hand under the camera and both elbows against your chest as well.

I would go to 1/250 and practice. Then down to 1/125 and practice some more. Once your technique improves, and it will, then try slower speeds. I think you'll find that you can get acceptable results most of the time with something in the 1/125 range.

    Thanks for the tips!
I really want to go out to the local track to really get some practice, this was out at our trail riding parking area so there really isn't anything all that interesting.
Elbows against the chest sounds like a good idea too, never thought of that.

I left out the part where you keep the feet planted and rotate at the hips.
