    Awesome!

f/4, ISO 200. 15-20m exposure for the trails.

Time lapse stuff is something you should shoot with a manual exposure. Are you using an intervalometer? I'd shoot one exposure every minute or so. Depending on how fast the layer is moving.

    Good luck!

Also, if you're an iPhone user, you can download several apps that will make the process of calculating TL shots easier. Actually, there are several apps that make planning easier. They are:

    • MiLapse - Calculate settings for Timelapse
    • Sun Seeker - Gives you the path of the sun. Also allows you to know where the sun will be at any given point in time.
    • Moon Seeker - Same as Sun Seeker.
    • Star Walk - This allows you to see where various stars will be. Like the Milkyway. Gives you sunrise/sunset plus rise and set times for Venus and Mars. Lots of other cool stuff too. Like locating objects using the camera.
    • Solar Walk - More a tour of the solar system. Not really necessary, just cool.

There are other apps that I'm sure do the same or similar things. I just happen to use these.

If you're shooting star trails with a D80 or D200, you'll be disappointed. The sensor overheats after about 15 minutes.

This was a few years back, 18 minutes exposure, and it was sub-zero outside so I don't think external temp helps :) Look in the top left corner, you'll see the purple. I don't know if Nikon fixed this problem later.

The purple was a problem in many other situations. Not just long exposures. Really sucked.

On a side note, I'm thinking about going to the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest in Sept or early Oct. Mostly to shoot star trails and maybe some TL too. Anyone else interested in doing that? It's about 1/2 way between for the NorCal/SoCal folks (outside of the town of Bishop more or less). Be camping and probably cold at night.

Aside from the ABCPF, there's also the Buttermilks, Alabama Hills and the Druid Stones.

In Alabama Hills, there's an arch that nicely frames Mt. Whitney as well as offering a profile view with the Milky Way as part of it.

So the area is pretty awesome as far as nighttime photography goes.

Went to venice/la yesterday and was able to hang out with Evidence. If anyone here knows anything about hip hop then you know who Ev is. I picked him up from a studio where he was recording with alchemist, chuck from cool kids and odd future... Pretty sick day to say the least.

    heres some pics

hmmmm that could be of different monitor calibrations. Because it seems ok on my display....any more and it would look like an HDR!
