    No worries.

I'm not surprised. One thing I've learned is time and patience are of the essence. Think about it. You're gonna make a 1200 frames in one night. Depending on your playback rate/interval, that's like 40s of movie

How does time lapse work, do they just pull out a tripod and record one spot all night then speed it up during editting?

i dont understand how the image moves slowly while the timelapse is moving fast.

I go to school with the guy who made this time lapse. He is legit at it. I'm working with him every so often to home my time lapse skills as well. He is a cool guy and knows his shit.

If you want to, yes. This technique works for showing motion like the construction of something or the movement of cars, etc.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. I think you mean how does the background move slowly while the sky moves quickly. The answer lies in the timelapse rail. A basic rail moves left to right. A more advanced rig incorporates a "goto" style telescope mount that can be moved left to right as well as up and down. Using a move-shoot-move, you take a shot, move the camera and repeat. The amount you move the camera determines that foreground movement. If a part of your subject is also moving (like the sky, leaves or ocean), then it will often appear to move faster.

You can also "push" and "pull" with the rail and a long(ish) lens. With the telescope mount, you can do more complicated moves (over, tilt up, rotate) for a much more different look. If the camera moves bottom to top, that produces a look different than left-right does.

HTH. If not, ask more questions.

Beat me to it...but the rails are the answer!

If you watched the Discovery Channel's mini-series "Planet Earth" a few years ago, they had a YEAR LONG time lapse of a rain-forest ecosystem that incorporated an elaborate rail system mixed with some artificial and natural environments AND some CG...REALLY impressive stuff.

I don't shoot time lapse because I don't have the patience, but I've always harbored a little secret jealousy towards those who do it so well.

You might recall I replied to someone's request for comments a while back. The quote was what I wrote.

I just noticed someone left some feedback on that.

A douche? Really? I am curious why a) you didn't sign your name and b) if you have a contrary opinion, you don't state it. I guess I'm also mildly curious what part of my reply you found objectionable.

Anyway. Back to the discussion on timelapse.

If you watch this, you will see one last technique for controlling the camera. I mentioned the telescope mount before. Typically, you control it by moving it directly. However, some of these mounts also allow you track objects in the sky. In the last few seconds of the video, you'll see that happen as the camera starts tracking the sky and the clouds disappear.

I thought it was a cool ending to the video. Also cool to see the lightning

There was a follow-up series that showed how they made a bunch of the sequences (like the camera used to record the shark sequence). They showed how that timelapse was made-that was incredibly cool-but you're right, it took time and patience to make it work so well. Not to mention, a whole crew by themselves to make it

I remember watching the behind the scenes stuff...if I recall, they were one of the first shows to jump on the bandwagon and did a lot of work with the 5dII ... building underwater mounts and so on. Could be wrong...I watch too many documentaries to keep them all straight!
