I have this pretty cool picture of my truck that I would like to edit a bit to get it to magazine cover quality like most of the ones I see on this thread. Do any of you have any suggestions as to what sort of settings I would need to mess with if I'm using photoshop or something? Any help is appreciated.

hahaha... yah, i was being serious... when it comes to photography, i don't hate on anybody...

i make it a point NOT to critique as i had a lot of haters among my peers when i first started in photography... at first i let it get to me and i was giving up on photo, but a published shooter i met told me to ignore the critiques and to shoot what looks good to me...

so in other words, yes, i do really like that shot...

    :D

I agree with the other folks here, you need a do-over... Whereas the late evening / early twilight sky can be a good part of the background, you would need two to three off-camera flashes positioned down low and additional light up high, shooting down onto the truck to get it lit well enough to see. Shining the headlights from another vehicle on it is insufficient.

Also, check your entire background. Loose the trailer with a reflective tag bouncing light back at you. Loose the telephone pole and any wires. Always take a couple of test shots and scrutinize them critically for stuff that shouldn't be seen.

Best advice, practice, shoot, review, repeat, repeat, repeat. Eventually you'll get good results as you learn how changing variables will affect the outcome.

The best advice I ever read in learning to shoot was "don't shoot the subject, capture the light as it relates to the subject!"

Here's an image I saw in passing, several months ago, while driving near downtown Dallas. I finally got an opportunity to go back and take a few shots today. Comments / critiques?

Convert it to Black and White with heavy contrast and it'll really pop

also check your horizons, it looks a little tilted

I'm working on the black and white and I agree, that contrast will make it pop.

    [IMG][/url]

As for the horizon, it is dead-on. I saw that when I set up for the shot and made sure I used the built-in inclinometer on the camera to verify level. It still looked funny, so I used the one in my i-phone, same results. The freaking ground slopes down to the left side of the picture and it falls away the deeper you go into it as well.

Here is another shot from the same area. I straightened up the ground to level and it looks strange to me after having been on-site. You may like it better...
